BALLOON TYRES
ANNIVERSARY OF DUNLOP COMPANY During recent years motor-cars have improved enormously, acceleration has been increased and fourwheel brakes introduced with the resu t that higher average speeds can be maintained, and the new low-hung design of car with the centre of gravity close to the road, makes fast cornering possible and helps further to increase road speeds. All these features have meant additional strain on tyres, with the result that mileages obtained have not a‘ways been as satisfactory as in the past. This has been the experience in Europe and America where roads are good, and it has been felt very much more in the Dominion where road surfaces compare very unfavourably with those in older countries. The Introduction of the balloon tyre also, while giving very much greater comfort on rough roads, has not proved an unmixed blessing to the New Zea’and motorist. since he has found it much more liable to give trouble under severe conditions. There has, therefore, been a feeling amongst many motorists that something better and stronger in the way of motor tyres is required, and it is interesting to note that the Dunlop Rubber Company are marking the 40th anniversary of the invention of the pneumatic tyre by introducing a new range of motor covers which arc specially designed to meet conditions such as exist in the Dominion. Specially constructed to have a very great reserve of strength, they should bo welcomed throughout the country to fill a long felt want. This special cover is distinguished by a coloured mcdal’ion on the side wall, and should appeal particularly to those who use their cars under SpcciAl’y severe conditions, and who pay particular regard to the cost per mile of their tyres.
