THE POWNALL TROPHY MATCH AT TAIHAPE TO-MOBROW WANGANUI CHALLENGERS The Wanganui Metropolitan Rugby Sub-Union representative team will journey to Taihape tomorrow, by motor, to challenge the holders of the Pownall TYoPhy. This will be the first occasion on •which the city has contested a match for this covcrted Rugby prize, which was presented some eight years ago by Mr G. H. Pownall to stimulate intcr-Sub-Union matches. It is realiy a trophy to be held by the champion Sub-Union team in the Wanganui district. Taihape lifted it from Rangitikei last year and has since withstood two challenges from that district, and as is only natural will make a determined effort to defend it to-morrow against the Metropolitan visitors. Taihape Play Good Bugby Rugby is very keen in Taihape thrs year and the recent defeat suffered by Wanganui on Spriggens Park at the hands of Beiliss’ team does not argur well for success for Wanganui in to-morrow’s encounter. It is confident’y hoped, however, that the river city fifteen which comprise quite a good team as teams go, will play with commendable vim and thus ensure that a good match will result. Junior Mafcch A junior representative team will a’so leave the city to-morrow to play the Taihape juniors. Wanganui can field quite a good fifteen from the junior grades and this year two scalps—Manawhenua and Rangitikei —have been taken .To-morrow’s match at Taihape should prove as interesting as the senior encounter, if not more so. THE WANGANUI TEAM CHANGED PERSONNEL There have been several defections from the side originally chosen to play Taihape to-morrow and the Wanganui team now stands as follows:

Fulton James Tilley Narbey Blyth Wakeling Walls Stiver Pine A r . Crotty Ross Stewart Anderson McCrae G. Lockett Reserves: Ormond, Murray (backs); Nodwell, Tait (forwards). IN THE CITY JUNIOR MATCH TO MORROW There will be only one match ployed in Wanganui to-morrow, that being a junior fixture between Kaierau and County to decide the Junior Cup competition. The venue will be Williams Park, Wanganui East, and the kick-off has been timed for 2 p.m. Kaierau’s team will be as follows: Tyree, Sexton, Trickett, Moir, Brownie, Clark, Stevenson, Scott, Rayner, Stevenson, Purnell, Jones, Beaven, Miller, Spriggens. THAT NARROW VICTORY COMMENT ON KING COUNTRY MATCH WANGANUI'S SPORTING ATTRIBUTES PRAISED [ Special “t/hronjcle*’ Service. ] RAETIHI, Sept. 13. There was little between the merit® oc the two teams—Wanganui and King Country—in the representative maten played here on Wednesday. The weather affected the attendance, but those who braved the elements were more than compensated by th© exciting play during the latter stages of the game. A Clean Game It was freely admitted by the spectators that the Wanganui team, as a whole, played an exceptionally clean game and proved themselves thorough sportsmen. In fact it was considered that the game was the most cleanly contested seen here for some time. Referee Lenient Although Leahy was the outstanding forward on the ground, he was doing quite a lot of “useful work” by standing a yard back from the line-outs and charging in to get possession. Fortunately for him the referee took a lenient view of his transgressions. Wakeling played a useful game despite the fact that his shoulders were well bandaged and any severe knock would have gone hard with him. “Like a Champion” Fulton, at full-back, handled remarkably w.ell and during the later stages acquitted himse'f like a champion. McLennan, at five-eighths, was impressive but was inclined to hang on and starve his outside men. Good Hookers Pine and Oxley hooked with great precision and, with Walls getting the ball away nicely from the scrums, the backs had many opportunities, but through the friside men not running straight the wingers were generally crowded out.

UNION MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE [ Per Press Association. J WELLINGTON, Sept. .12. A meeting of the Management Committee °f New Zeaiand Rugny Union was held to-night. The New South \vales Union wrote suggesting that the New Zealand Universities and Rugby Council should invite an Australian Universities team, to include Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane players, to visit the Dominion next season, instead of a Sydney University team. The manager of th e New Zealand team cableu irom Cap e Town that the All Blacks would play Victoria at Melbourne on the homewaid journey if such a match would not affect the connection with the Sydney boat. Mr Dean drew attention to the fact that Minns, of Auckland, had been sent down fdr the first test at Wellington, when he was obviously unfit for play. Minns was limping badly when he reached Wellington and he had sent him to a doctor. No blame was attachab 4 e to Minns, but the Auckland Union should never have sent him down. It was decided to ask the Auckland Union for an explanation. For business reasons Cooke will not be available for the third test against New South Wales.
