GOLDEN DAFFODILS

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY'S SHOW FINE QUALITY OF BLOOMS In tho absence of the t( breeze” the daffodils displayed. at the Wanganui Horticultural Society’s Spring Show, which opened yesterday, p rented a stately rather than he “jocund company” encountered on the well-known occasion by the poet Wordsworth. The Drill Hall in Maria Place, wb the show is being held, pr' ?tcd a very I asing sight with the long tables neatly arrayed w'Lh vases containing tho different vari tics of daffodils, while additional cesuur was lent by the exceller x displays of hyacinths, ranunculus, anemone- an" other spring flowers. The outstanding feature of the show was the exhibition of blooms by the National Daffodil Society of New Zealand. Although the entrie were not as numerous as in previous years the quality was of a very hig p order, and quite in h ''ing with the standard set in tho past. The Fortune, Renown and Tenodos were a few amongst the many very fine specimens wh : ’ excited general admiration. An increase in the number of entries was shown in the Horticultural Society’s exhibits,. Natural’ the quality was not the sa..x as in the Daffodil Society’s exhibits, but nevertheless, many of the amateur stands were quite worthy of the awards given them. Exhibitors who were promin. -t in the various classes were Air C. I. E. Rhodes, Mr W. A. Grace, Air J. C. Glover, Miss / shmore, Air H. P. Lance, Mr N. C. Barstow, Airs Goss and Airs E. Al. Simmon.. In tho decoratice classes competition was very keen. There was quite a numerous displa. or tables, and interest was add. -1 to this section by leaving three tables to the adjudi Gon of the visitors. The result of the voting will be announced this evening. It was pleasing to note that the children’s lasses were well patronised, there being no less than twenty entries in one section. The button-holes, boquets, and baskets of flowers displayed by the juvenile competitors created a good deal of interest. The judges of the show r were Mrs H. Washer, of Hawera, decorative classes; Mr J. Waugh, of Hutt Valley Nurseries, Lower Hutt, narcissi classes; and Air 8. Cox, bulbous blooms not otherwise specified, blooms other than bulbs and pot plants. The secretarial work was efficiently carried out by Air V. B. Willis, and a band of officials assisted in making a success of the show, which /ill concluded to-day. The following are the awards:— Narcissi, Amateurs.
