TWO-YEAR-OLD PARADE ATTRACTS ATTENTION

JUVENILES’ FIRST OUTING IN PUBLIC Though there were eight events at the Wanganui Jockey- Club’s opening day yesterday on which the totalisator was open and in which the public showed most interest, another event that was also scheduled did not fail to gain its fair share of attention. This was the parade of two-year-olds, which, though designated a parade, is in addition almost a race itself, for the juveniles are sprinted about two furlongs up the straight in order to show their paces in public and allow owners and trainers an opportunity of seeing how their charges will shape with the colours up. Yesterday’s display did not fail to [ prove the usual “draw” for it was a, feature of the day and of the 33 youngsters whose names figured on the “cor- j rect” card some 28 took part. Unfor- , tunately the parade has grown to great-ci er proportions than had been thought f possible and no provision was made by j the Club for a set division of the field. J Hence tho party of juveniles madq ‘ their way to the starting post in mot- 1

Icy order and with a riot of colour from the brilliant silks of the riders that made difficult the task of sorting out the various babies.

The race book gave tho names of thia juveniles and their breeding, and in addition the owner’s namo only. No colours for the riders -rere mentioned and thus when it came to picking out any particular starter the average racegoer was all at sea. It would, in the opinion of many, have been preferable if the Club had decided to run the parade in three divisions of 11 starters each, indicating in tho race book which horses should otart in tho different divisions and what colon< their riders should sport. Thus owners, trainers and breeders, as well as the general public, would be able to follow the parade with more ease and greater certainty, with tho result that the form of the early two-year-old events would not be so much of a closed book to racegoers. However, this is sure to

conic in the near future. In the first division, which contained inorc starters than the second, the field got away well considering the fact that the majority of the starters were rather strange to barrier practice, and Hunting Day, Franeolin, Imperial Guard, .Speed Light and Valprc showed out as they ran for the entrance of the straight. Franeolin did not take long to assume command and led up the straight from VaJpre, Imperial Guard, Monalof and Hunting Day. The Paper Money—Philomela filly showed fine speed in the final burst to finish in front of Valprc, with Imperial Guard third and Coon Song, Hunting Day and Monalof following. Franeolin should make a name for herself in early two-year-old events, while Imperial Guard and Hunting Day I also appeal. For the second division there was nol such a large “field” hut the start wai of rather a straggling nature. Praeds was smartest to begin and was followed by Tea Queen and First Money. Whei they straightened up First Money wai I in front of Praeda with Tea Queen and I Roman Lake following, and held his own to beat Praeda, Tea Queen, Rule Britannia and Roman Lake.

I Tho Paper Money—Peronilla colt is (well forward and appears more of a [ solid customer than some of 7 ho others. I Praeda is a smart beginner. Tea Queen •is another that will b.o good later on in the season. In view of the Deoutanto stakes contest to-morrow tho form dismayed in the parade may prove illuminating. Details of the finishes of tho two divisions are as follows: First Division. Francolin (Mr lan Duncan) br. f. by Paper Money—Philomela .. 1 Valpre (Mr G. F. Moore) ch. f. by Chief Ruler—Valerio 2 Imperial Guard (Mr E. Riddiford) b. by Valkyriau—Whitianga .. 3 Coon Song (Mr A. P. Easton) blk. c. by Hunting Song—Sangfroid 4 Hunting Day (Mr A. B.
