BRITAIN’S EXPORTS STILL EXPANDING
JULY FIGURES SHOW BRIGHTER POSITION ( By Telegraph—Per Press Assn.—Copyright ] [ Australian Press Assn. ] LONDON, Aug. 14. British trade returns for July show that compared with July, 1927, imports increased by £2,086,000; exports increased by £4,764,000, and re-exports decreased by £1,299,000. The principal increases in imports were: Grain and flour, £829,000; meat, £933,000; dutiable food and dri-k, £965,000; raw cotton, £2,014,000. In [exports the chief increase were: Cotton yarns and manufactures, £873,000; vehicles, £2,133,000. The principal decrease in imports were: Wood and timber, £1,668,000; wool, £1,063,000; rubber, £1,137,000. In exports the chief decrease was:— Iron and steel manufactures, £8,990,000. British exports for July amounted to £60,885,000, being an increase of £l,412,000, compared with the previous month, and an increase of £5,764,000 compared with July of last year.
In the first seven months of this year exports have increased by over £17,500,000 compared with the same period of 1927. Imports for July amounted to £95,468,000, showing a decline of £3,901,000 compared with June. For the seven months of this year imports show a d - crease of nearly £10,000,200 compared with the corresponding period last year. The .extent to which British motor car manufacturers arc penetratiing the Dominion markets is shown in the returns. The number of touring cars shipped during the month was 1346. Compared with the same month last year New Zealand increased her orders from 25 to 151 cars; South Africa from 122 to 160; and the Irish Free State from 232 to 444. In addition 649 compelte light chassis were sent to Australia, compared with 268 in the corresponding month of 1927.
