Speeches by Telephone

Anyone who has endured the tedium of listening to numerous translations of speeches at international conferences will look forward with interest to an experiment to be tried at the International Labour Conference at Geneva. By means of telephone*; and headpieces, a speech is to be translated simultaneously into three or four languages. The interpreters will sit next to the speaker and translate his remarks through a telephone. Those who wish to hear the translation of a speech in a particular language will use the headphone labelled for that language. It is believed there will be no difficulty in furnishing a running translation in the manner described, and if the scheme proves practicable, much time and labour and considerable boredom will be avoided.
