ILLICIT WHISKY STILLS DOWN SOUTH [ Per Press Association ] INVERCARGILL, July 25. At the Police Court to-day Duncan Alexand< r Stuart was charged with being unlawfully in possession of a still at Otapiri Gorge and unlawfully making spirits. The accused pleaded guilty and was fined £450 on the first charge and £5O on the second. Janies Robertson, similarly charge! in connection with a still found at Awarua Bay, was fined £3O on each charge. The Collector of Customs said the making of whisky had been notorious in Southland for the last 50 years. Ho estimated the loss to the Government during the period at tens of thousands of pounds. He stressed the fact of it being made wholesale and nun offered it for sale in Dunedin. Bota accused were relatives of Macrae’s, who was fined, four years ago for running a still at Springhiils. The night previous to Stuart’s arrest 2C gallons were sold at Hedgehope at £2 a gallon.
