THE ORPHANAGE

SOUNDLY CONDUCTED

' JMTEBEST TAKEN IN CHILDREN ;

±’hat the Wanganui Orpiianug. continues to be couuucted on sound business lines is shown by the financial position of the institution to be disclosed at the annual meeting of subscribers on Saturday afternoon. lhe total expenditure for the past year, according to the annual report, was £1054 -ils Ibd, which works out at 12per child per week. “The Orphan-gv,’’ states the report, ‘‘continues to do very usei .1 work, and affords help to many deserving cases. There arc at present in the Hume 34 children, 23 girls and 11 buys. During the year three childreij have gone uut intu the world and Others have taken their places. lhe Jloinfl has been full all the time. Eveij application for admission is considered by the committee and in every instance the most deserving cases a gianted admission, 'lhe general health uf the children has been good and on this point the matron and under-mat-icn are to lie thanked. Rarely has there been occasion to call in the doctor. This result clearly shows what good, plain loud and nvailny surroundings will do. The Matron. Mrs Ham muiid, still has control of the institution and has the full confidence oi the committee. Mention must be made uf Miss Fry, the under matron. The work done by these two ladies is indeed arduous and is highly thought oi by yuur committee. ••lhe number of subscribers at present on the books is 11b. Now it is thought this can be largely added io and we appeal to ail thuse who can to join up as subscribers and give us the benefit of their help and guidance. •’The following members oi lhe committee retire this year, Mrs H. ±*. Christie, Mrs Turnbull, Mrs K. Hughes and Mrs J. Grant. These members are all eligible for re-election if they so wish. “The garden and grounds are well looked alter and are beginning to have a really nice appearance. In th' course of time this will be one uf the beauty spots of Wanganui and it is felt that, in making it brautiiul lhe principals are helping to educate the children to love tiiat which is good. During the year tnc Hume was painted at a cost ui £lO4 17s 6d. •*lhc treasurer’s balance sheet diseases a small loss during the year, which is not serious. When one considers that it cost over £lOOO to run the Home for a year, it is very gratifying that the year can be ended so well. The work of running the Home and bringing up the children is a work which every one of the committee •akes a deep interest in, and they are fortunate in having two ladies, the matron and the un :er-matron, who do all in their power to give satisfactory results. The education of the children is very carefully looked after, and both in the day schools and the Sunday schools one hears of the excellent behaviour of the children. The buys and girls are allowed to join the Scouts and Girl Guides. This is good, as they then meet outside children and get more confidence to face the world when their times comes to go out- ’’
