WAIROA GOES DOWN WANGANUI MUCH THE BETTER TEAM VISITORS FAIL TO TACKLE Wanganui soundly defeated Wairoa on Park yesterday, the final scores in a very one-sided game being 31 to 6. The visitors made a rally in the second spell* crossing the home line twice in quick succession. Apart from this effort, however, they rarely looked dangerous and the scores when the game ended correctly represented the relative merits of the two sides. Blyth, the Wanganui half-back, was the outstanding player on the field. He displayed plenty of vim and got the ball clear with fast clean passes which enabled the blue backs io seriously challenge the defence. Lack of tackling on Wairoa’s part aided these attacks. Wairoa opened a passing movement early, but it lacked sting, the blues closing up smartly and the attack failed at half-way. Stiver charged down a clearing kick, the blue forwards coming away in a dribbling rush which caused Wairoa to- force. The home backs began to assort themselves, Blyth, Hunter, Wakeling, Glenn and Simpson handling in succession. The home side kept hammering at the white defence and Wairoa forced twice in succession. Not to be denied the attackers held to their task. From a line out close to the white goal V. Crotty scored. Simpson was too slow and K. Broughton charged the ball before it was kicked.—Wanganui 3, Wairoa 0.

Stiver kicked high and Ke< pa misjudged the flight of the ball, Stiver coming through to kick over the line. He was obstructed in atempting to dive but scored, and Simpson added the points.—Wanganui 8, Wairoa 0. Showing weight in the tight Wairoa forced Wanganui to defend. Hammond sent the line away, Hurley, Cowdell, Nankeville. and Whakarua handling, the blue defence holding to force the attack into to.uch. The blue forwards swept the play back to half-way, Stiver passing to Blyth, to Hunter. With three men outide him the home five-eighths scored. Fulton failed to improve the effort. —Wanganui 16, Wairoa 0. The scores were unaltered at halftime. Wairoa Score in Second Half , Kuril and Sloane headed the ■whites into blue territory, play hanging as the home backs went down. Wakeling, Hunter, Simpson and Glenn handled for the winger to reap the reward. Fulton failed to convert. —Wanganui 19. Wairoa 0. The home side wore penalised but Morris could not goal. Blyth opened a rearguard movement, Nankeville intercepting a pass between Hunter and Simpson to break clear. Drawing Fulton he transferred to Cowdell racing in support, sending him over to score.
