THE TURF

WANGANUI “CLASSICS’’ UST OF NOMINATIONS GUINEAS AND JACKSON STAKES The Wanganui Jockey Club has received what may be considered a very satisfactory response from owners and breeders in connection with th'e nominations for the Wanganui Guineas and the Jackson Stakes of 1929. The Jackson Stakes will be run at the next autumn meeting and the Guineas at the spring fixture of 1929. For the Guineas, which ranks as the first of the racing season’s “classic” races, a total of 68 figures on the nomination list. Of these four owners are responsible for a quartet each, Messrs W. T. Hazlett, T. H. Lowry, E. V. Riddiford and A. B. Williams according that measure of support. Mr G. M. Currie, of the Koatanui stud, has entered Ceremony, Pedestal and Alloy, while Messrs C. Elgar and E. h. Jolly have also,a trio of entrants for this event. „ The Jackson Stakes has attracted 16 nominations, among which the live entered by Mr T. H. Lowry stand out as the largest contribution by any individual owner. It is interesting to note that included in the list of entries are some of the leading two and three-year-old performers of the season now drawing to a close. Following is a list of the nominations received for the two events, the ages given in the Jackson Stakes being those at date of nomination:— Wanganui Guineas. < A sweepstake of £lO each for starters, with £5OO added; for three-year-olds; colts Bst. 101 b., fillies and geldings Bst. 51b.; distance one mile.)
