THE RABBIT PEST
WORK OF ERADICATION MENACE ALMOST ENTIRELY REMOVED. [ Special "Chronicle” Service ] AUCKLAND June 27. { ‘ln 'ton years’ time there will not be a rabbit left in New Zealand” said Mr W. P. Spencer a member of the Sol: wyn Plantations Board according to a report received from Christchurch. Auckland authorities, although agreeing with Mr Spencer that the rabbit menace has been almost entirely removed, consider that in ten years there
will still be rabbits. A member of the staff of the Agricultural Department stated this morning that the two rabbit boards in the Auckland district were doing excellent work la-ely. He had reported that on his rounds it was not uncommon to see only five or six rabbits a week. The same conditions also prevailed in the Waikato district and in the King Country. He said that recently he motored through the King Country to Now Plymouth, and in districts whore rabbits once abounded, on the roads scarcely any wore to bo seen. In the Waiuku district, toward the coast, rabbits wore still fairly plentiful in the sandy and clay country, but strychnine, mixed with carrots or oats, was proving an efficacious method of keeping them down.
