VACANT SEATS
THE BRITISH COMMONS FIVE BY-ELECTIONS PENDING. [ British Official Wireless. ’ RUGBY, June 24. Of five Parliamentary by-elections now pending, little interest is being displayed in those taking place in Epsom, HuJborn, and Hallam (Sheffield), owing to the substantial majorities by which the Conservatives have held these seats in the past. In Halifax no election has taken place for many years, Mr J. H. Whitley, a Liberal, secured an unopposed return ever since his appointment as Speaker of the House of Commons seven years ago. Three candidates are now contesting the seat. There are also three candidates for the seat at Carmarthen, which is rendered vacant by the elevation to the Peerage of Lord Melchctt, formerly Sir Alfred Mond, who was returned as a Liberal at the last election, but later crossed the floor of the House.
