The congratulations of the Library Committee of the Wanganui city Council were last evening extended to Miss Comric, assistant librarian, on having passed her examination in library routine, held by the English Library Association.
The late Right Rev. Dr. Wallis, whose death was reported from London yesterday was born at Hastings, Englund, in 1553, his father being the late Bev. Joseph. Wallis, Vicar of Sr. Andrew’s, Blockwell, London. Lr. Wallis was educated at St. Paul's School, and afterwards at Gonviise and Cuius College, Cambridge. He was ordained as deacon in 1878, and in the following year received ms priestly ordination from the Bishop or Ely, at Ely Cathedral. In 1878 he was appointed dean and lectuer of Divinity at the College, and in 1886 becamo examining chapiin to the Bishop of Salisbury. From 1878 till 1883, he was honorary curate of St. Luke’s, Chesterton, near Cambridge. On the retirement of Bishop Hadfield, a new bishop was needed for the diocese of Wellington, and the brilliant young Englisa lecturer and chaplain accepted an invitation extended to him. Dr. Wallis arrived in Wellington in January, 1895, accompanied by Mrs Wallis, who is a. daughter of Colonel Sir Robert Williams. Dr. Wallis proved an energetic organiser and administrator, and became very popular in Wellington. Early in 1911, however, he caused wide-spread regret by announcing that he had decided to resign, owing to bad health. He returned to England, having accepted the Archdeaconry of Wiltshire, but the state of his health brought about his resignation the following year.
