MR. HOLLAND ON TOUR
WELL-WORN CRITICISMS REPEATED [ Per Press Association I GISBORNE, June 24. Mr H. E. Holland, Leader of the Opposition, addressed a large gathering last night., speaking on the lines of previous addresses. Mr Holland explained Labour’s policy at length and attacked the Reform Party on the freehold. He also stated that Reform, instead of legislating to provide finance and credit for the fanners and producers, had made taxation concessions claimed to assist the farmers, but the speaker challenged any working farmer to show profits from the benefits or concessions he had received. The Government was attacked on the price paid for land for soldier settlers. After criticising land aggregation and settlement of timbered areas, tho speaker dealt with unemployment, claiming that the Government had no need to resort to relief work, but should prosecute vigorous public works such as railways and roads, which would absorb every man able to work at standard rates of pay. The speaker twitted the Reformers’ with voting against old age pensions and said the measure would never have been provided but for Liberal and Labour forces headed by the late Mr Scdron. Reform had squealed at the prospects of increasing old ago pensions, hut voted £1,000,000 for the Singapore Base, which would be oboslete long before its completion. The speaker concluded by criticising the Samoan Mandate on the lines of his former speeches. During the evening Mr Holland announced that the Mayor, Mr W. D. Coleman, would be the official Labour candidate for Gisborne at the coming election.
