FOR GENERAL NOBILE
ICE TOO BOUGH FOR ’PLANES SEARCH FOB AMUNDSEN [ Anatralian Press Assn.—United Service ] Received June 24, 5.5 p.m. ROME, June 23. Official messages state that Captain Penso twice came down to 15 feet in an attempt to alight at General Nobile's camp, but the rough ice made the attempt hopeless. The marooned men are therefore making a smooth landing place. The party of alpinists returned to the steamer Braganza, as they failcrl to locate Malgren’s party. The Citta di Milano is sending out a seaplane to search for Captain
Amunsden along the west coast of Spitzbergen. The Italian Government prize-giving committee for important artistic and scientific works has awarded Captain Maddalena and his comrades, £l9OO for finding General Nobile.
Messages from Paris state: “There is growing anxiety for the safety of Captain Amundsen and Major Gilbaud, •Respite the fact that they carried a fortnight’s provisions, but air experts point out that the seaplane is of most solid construction, capable of riding out any seas.”
