NEXT WEEK’S ATTRACTIONS

“THE STUDENT PRINCE” AND MADAME POMPADOUR”

The success of the exceptionally beautiful musical play, “The Student Prince,” which will be in Wanganui next Thursday, is but a repetition of the Australian tour. Australian papers waxed lyrical regarding the beauty of the .show, and the Auckland premiere drew forth unstinted praise for the charming Dutch actress, Bcppy de Vries, whose quaint beauty lenos additional charm to the role of Kathie. Messrs J. and C. Williamson submit “The Student Prince” in full panoply of gorgeous scenes, wonderful trucking, catching tunes, dancing that will amaze and ensembles that are the creation of artists.’ Based on the play “Old Heidelberg,” “The Student Prince” is the love story of a prince who loves the waitress in the humble inn of a University town, but who is betrothed to Lis Princess cousin. The music is enchanting, the drama absorbing, the comedy diverting, while there is a full complement of forty singing students, a capable orchestra and dainty girls aplenty. Other names to conjure with are those of Arthur Stigant, the wellknown comedian, Janies Liddy, the juvenile lead who created the role of Prince Carl in America and who sings delightfully with Miss de Vries; Vera Spa nil, in broad comedy; Hedly Hall and Frank Webster, who almost run away with the musical honours; Russell Scott, Noel Dainton, John Forde, Peg Desmond, George Conyngham, Adele Crane, Millie Engler and others. “The Student Prince” is to be followed on Friday night by “Madame Pompadour,” in which the fascinating little actress is said to be irresistible. There are sixteen big numbers in the musicail play which, by the way, has been played in most of the principal cities of the. world. Known as the “Dutch Lily Elsie,” Miss do Vries created a furore in Australia, where she appeared, as .Kathie, the serving-maid, and more than lived up to the reputation that induced the firm if J. C. Williamson to engage her for the Australian tour. James Liddy, who created the part of Prince Karl in America, will be seen in the same role in New Zealand, a role in. which he is particularly interested on account of its possibilities. Miss Minnie Hooper has charge of the ballets and Mr Victor Champion is musical director. Forty singing students provide choruses with a lilt in every bar.

Juno Collyer, the young lady of the brown eyes and hair, who plays Josephine in “East Side West Side,” is uno of the luckiest little ladies in films. She conies of a famous New York theatrical family, and it seemed that her career lay in the same direction until she met the Fox director. Allan Dwan. He was looking for a girl to play the part of Josephine and suggested to June that she should take a test. The result was very satisfactory ami Miss Collyer had the part. She played in “Womanwise,” “Four Sons,” and is now engaged in “Hangman’s House.”
