NEW BLOOD
SHIPMENT OF JERSEYS FAMOUS AMERICAN STUD From time to time Jersey bulls have been imported to New Zealand from America and Jersey Island, and at odd intervals females of this breed have also been introduced. Cable advice has just been received which indicates, however, that the most momentuous introduction of new blood to the Dominion is planned by the Dean of American breeders, Mr T. S. Cooper, of Linden Grover Coopersburg, Penn., U.S.A., who is shipping direct from New York to Wellington a consignment of 14 head of highly bred cattle, including two notable young sires used in his great herd named Oxford Beau’s Combination and Oswald’s Victor. These two bulls are rising four-year-olds and are generally regarded to be. two of the greatest Jersey bulls of their age in America to-day. Both are wonderfully well bred, both from the point of view of high quality and great production. A half brother to Oswald’s Victor is already in the Dominion and has never been defeated in the leading show-rings in Taranaki. Oswald’s Victor, however, is closely related on the dam’s side to Fauvic’s Prince, the leading sire of 1000 lb. butterfat cows in the world. Oxford Beau’s Combination, who was born in 1924, is held in America to be the greatest living son of Combination’s Premier. Despite the fact that one of his sons, Masterman of Oaklands, was champion over Jersey Island, in America he was recently described as one of tho most valuable bulls living and destined for a place among the world’s most successful sires. The Island of Jersey has nut the material today wherewith to produce his equal. The arrival of this good bull in New Zealand will undoubtedly be a great event in the history of the dairying industry, for accompanying him will be two of his yearling sons and five of his yearling daughters.
In addition Mr Cooper is shipping a number of other very high class females all of which arc in calf to notable sires. In addition to three bulls bred by Air Cooper, which are at the present time heading prominent New Zealand Jersey breeders’ herds, Air Cooper also owned in America the sires of such former famous New Zealand Jerseys as Majesty’s Fox. Campanile .Sultan, The Owl’s Victor, Eminent's Fontaine, etc.
It is understood that Air Cooper, who has been a breeder and importer of Jerseys lor nearly 60 years will himself arrive in New Zealand in August. His consignment of cattle have been shipped direct to Alessrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd., the well-known stud stock agents, being imported under a special permit issued by the Government and will be quarantined on .Somes Island, in the Wellington Harbour, for two months. The journey from New York will take 35 days. All the cattle successfully passed the various tests imposed by the Department of Agriculture before permission to ship them was given.
The dairying industry of the Dominion will undoubtedly * receive great benefit from the importation planu.d which is marked by enterpiise uf the unusual.
