The inhabitants of a Dorsetshire village have, it is reported, been perturbed of late by the sight of a mysterious figure passing silently through their midst, on a motor-cycle. It sounds as if someone has invented a really good silencer at last!
Studebaker statistics show that January and February showed wonderful increase in sales. January, in fact, was the biggest January in Studebaker history in America, and also a record in . Australia. In this month factory sales of Studebaker and Erskine cars to distributors and dealers in export markets exceeded every January in their history and were 101 per cent, greater than January, 1927.
February, like January, showed a remarkable increase over the corresponding month of 1927. both in the U.S.A, and in Australia.
That one Londoner in every 20 wiil meet with a traffic accident and that it is three times as .dangerous for a London child to be out in the streets as it is for chil ren in the rest of the country, arc rather startling statements appearing in the annual report on education, newly issued by the London City Council.
To prevent the material lining tininside of a door from being scratched it is a good plan to attach small metal plates to the lower corners of the door. These plates can be quite conveniently made from thin sheet aluminium —or even sheet steel, if it is enamelled to match the upholstery—and should be fixed to the door panelling with countersunk wood screws.
Difficulty is often expressed in adjusting wing nuts on brake rods, particularly when the threads have become rusted. The nuts can be turned easily if a simple tool is constructed as follows: Cut a wide slot down the end of a piece of steel tubing and drill a hole through the other end. The brake rod fits .down the tube and the wings of the nut arc gripped thc . slot “ The rod can be turned by slipping a tommy-bar through the hole at the other end.
The tool exerts an even pressure and minimises the danger of a fractured nut. while it is equally effective where wings have already been broken.
Many cars arc fitted, with a Yaletype lock for both the ignition switch and gear locks, thc key in the former case usually forming thc actual switc.i arm. Most motorists fasten these keys together wit> an ordinary key ring, but this has the defect that when the car is in motion, with the switch key in position, thc gear lock key swings about and scratches the instrument board. To obviate this, drill the holes in thc ends of thc keys on the same daimetcr, and clamp them together with a brass or aluminium rivet, passed through the two holes, loosely enough, of course, so that one key can be swung out. of the way wlien it is desired to insert the other in its lock. When fastened in this way. the gear lock key will not deface thc instrument, board.
