THE NEW FORD
TOP GEAR RANGE ENGLISH WRITER’S VIEWS. Providing that one pushes the spark lever back the New Ford can be induced to run evenly and continuously at round about five miles per hour on top gear. During the past year I have heard 1 a lot of loose claims about how slow it is possible to cause an engine to tick over, but my experience is that it is not desirable to place too much reliance on the speedometer, since these instruments may work irregularly below 6 miles per hour (says an English writer). It is also deceptive to judge by the speed of passing objects for after a burst of 60 miles per hour. .15 m.p.h. feels .like a crawl. The only way to test if your car will run at walking pace is to open the door white the car is running, and walk alongside it, steering it by holding the wheel while you arc walking along the road.
If you try this test on the New Ford you will find, as I did l , that no aerobatics are needed. The car ambles along at a walking pace in top gear. In all, I must have walked half a mite alongside the empty car, steering It through the open door while it was running in top gear. On resuming your seat you have, only to press the accelerator pedal to get away from that, slow walk to the Tiiax* imuni speed of which the ear is capable without a protesting knock from the engine.
