LIBRARY METHODS
WANGANUI TO THE FORE IMPROVEMENTS WHEN NEW BUILDING IS PROVIDED. Miss E. Comrie, who has been an assistant on the Wanganui Public Library staff for seven years, has received advice from London that she has obtained a pass for the British Library Association’s examination for “Library Routine” (practical library administration). A certificate is issued for this, and there are very few in New Zealand. Mass Comrie is to be congratulated on her success. This award brings to notice the. fact that the Wanganui Library can hold its own well. It may surprise many to know that for methods of administration the library is ahead of some of the English libraries. In a recent English Library Review it was stated that the Lambeth Public Libraries are to be reorganised on open access lines - —the system in use here. Instead of subscribers consulting an indicator and having to ask for books they will be allowed access to the shelves. In 1894 the first attempt was made to admit readers to the shelves, and, there was a great outcry and doleful prophesies of disasters ahead. However, the movement was established and gradually be came universal
When a new library building becomes an established fact in Wanganui several schemes of work will be introduced which cannot, on account of restricted accommodation, be brought into use at present.
