TAIHAPE

KING’S THEATRE PICTURES. I Special "Chronicle” Service. ] Marie Corelli’s greatest work “The Sorrows of Satan” shows to-night at the King’s. It is a strictly modern epic drama of love, temptation and regeneration stupendously conceived and produced by D. W. Griffith from the book that has been read by millions. And who could be more attractive as the suave, sophisticated, smiling, silkhatted Satan than -Adolphe Menjou? Persuasive, charming, altogether irresistible. A story of modern youth and its temptations. GOLF NOTES. A team of golfers journeyed to Maugaweka on Monday. Four ball matches were played in the morning and afternoon and the majority of these were won by the Taihape players. In the morning Waymouth and Agnew (Mangaweka) put up a great light against Evans and J. P. Mortland (Taihape). The match ended in favour of the visiting players, who finished one up. In the afternoon they won by a bigger margin. Another contest that created a great deal of interest was that between Thompson and Stewart (Mangaweka) and Auld and McClure (Taihape). On the morning the Taihape pair were successful but in the afternoon Stewart and Thompson played great golf and managed to defeat their op* ponents. The best ball score of the Mangaweka pair for the first nine holes was 36. Morning and afternoon tea and luncheon were provided by the Mangaweka ladies to whom the Taihape players are greatly indebted for such hospitality. Altogether the visit was extremely enjoyable and a return match is awaited with pleasurable anticipation. The results of last week’s Shergold Cup competitions were as follows:—A grade: H. O’Callaghan, 97 —14 —83; J. Evans, 88—5—S3; B grade: R. Henricks, 100—19—81; H. Eaton, 106—22 —B4. This week’s competition is a four ball best ball bogey to be played ; any day during the week. Players arrange their own games. Scores for this competition will also count for open eclectic provided players pay the usual entrance fee. Several games were again played for the Raukura Cup, and J. Evans and Miss Matthew were successful in gaining the top place on the ladder their score being 106—20J—--85}. The previous best score was 121— 34—87 by Dr and Mrs Hay. Ladies Golf Notes. It appears that two gigs, one containing Miss Mickleson and two other ladies and the other occupied by Mr C. Mickleson and hi.q two brothers were endeavouring to pass on the Turiraukawa Road when the gig containing the three ladies got so near the edge of the road that it capsized and plungty] over the bank.

Fortunately all three occupants escaped with nothing worse than a severe shaking and minor abrasions.

Both gigs were travelling in the same direction when the accident occurred. PERSONAL Mr W. S. Glenn, M.P., was in Taihape yesterday. Sergeant D. J. O’Neill has returned from a holiday spent in the South Island. Mr and Mrs L. Brooky have returned from Wellington. Miss J. Spooner has returned from Plimmerton.
