A BRUTAL MURDER

OLD COUPLE BATTERED ASSAILANT SENTENCED TO DEATH [ Australian Pre*-? Assn. ] MELBOURNE, May 19. George Gordon, aged 30, has been sentenced to death for the murder of an elderly couple of storekeepers near Bairnsdale on February 16, named Richard and Catherine Clements. Tho pair were foully murdered during the night, their heads being battered. Gordon lived in the neighbourhood. His clothes were bloodstained and his finger prints wore on a chest of drawers, giving the chief clues to his arrest and conviction. Gordon’s defence was an alibi.
