A Sydney cablegram announces tho death of Mr J. Grant, deputy-leader of the Labour Party in the Senate, aged 71.

The Christchurch United Party supporters, at a meeting on Saturday night selected Mrs T. E. Taylor as the candidate for Christchurch North.

A message from Winnipeg states that the Primate of Canada, Dr. 8. P. Matheson, aged 76, is seriously ill and all his engagements have been cancelled.

Tho death is announced from Berlin of Herr Rudolph Heinze, leader of the German People’s Party, in Saxony. Death -was duo to heart failure after a strenuous election campaign.

The Hon. A. D. McLeod, Minister of Lands, arrived early this morning from Wellington. He remains in the city to-day and leaves to-morrow on an official inspection in Taranaki.

The death of General Baron Anfenberg, who defeated the Russians at Komarow in August, 3 9.14, in the first battle of the world war is reported from Vienna. Ho was eventually disgraced, as he was allegedly responsible for a later failure.

A Hamilton message reports the death of the Rev. Dr. Thaddcus O’Callaghan, D.D. (Anglican). Deceased was born in Ireland in 1846 and was ordained in 1869. Later he was vicar of St. George’s Thames. Ho was chaplain to the 2nd Battalion. Auckland Regiment.

A Thames message reports the death of Mere Pcreniki, at Puru, Thames. She was once a chicftaincss of the Ngatimaru tribe i.nd was very respected by Maori and Pakeha alike as an authority of tribal lore and native women’s customs. She leaves a son, Hare Pcrenciki, a prominent Rangitira. and a- daughter, Haora Tarangangui. Deceased was aged 72.
