THE NEW GRAND For excellence of story, direction and acting, take a trip to the New Grand Theatre and see “Marriage.” .Lt opened on tJalurtiay evening before a large and enthusiastic audience and it’ll be there until to-morrow, (Ti.*>day). “Marriage” is a story iur everyone, it is I'ox Films adaptation cl the widely discussed novel of that noted .Englishman, 11. G. Wells, incidentally, ‘‘Marriage” is the first Wells story tu reach the silver-sheet. “Marriage” sets forth in vivid fashion the difficulties that en.sue after the marriage of a couple —both very much in love with each other, but of very widely different temperaments. The man is an idealist. The woman is a realist. The story is unfolded in a smooth manner and the climax is presented with great intensity. 11. William Neill, who has directed many outstanding productions has succeeded very well in bringing out the human side of the characters in “Marriage." There are touches throughout the film that arc a credit to the brilliant director. Virginia Valli plays the leading feminine role. Opposite her is Allan Durant, a newcomer from Germany. Miss Valli and Durant give excellent performances. Their love scenes have a rare charm and delicacy. Others in the east include Lawford Davidson, James Marcus, Donald Stuart, Edwards Davis and Billie Bennett. The supports include topical, showing all the latest in picture news. An excellent variety subject and a very amusing comedy, “Roses and Ruses,” o’Henry comedy. Seats may be secured at theatre office or Phone 3152. Wednesday’s Attraction A big double attraction is booked for showing at the new Grand on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday when “The Red Raiders,” a powerful historical western drama of the pre-Civil War hostilities between the army and savage Indians will be screcnadv StaiI ring Ken Maynard, the dashing westI ern hero, the new western represents | the most interesting of the series product'! by the Charles K. Rogers company for First National. The story involves the attempts of rebel Indians to wage war against the settlers and the intervention of the U.S. Cavalry to restore peace. It was taken from a true chapter of American history which witnessed the first Indian reservation established by the Government. and the events preceding this move. Ann Drew, the charming actress who gained recognition overnight after a year in pictures, has the loathing feminine role opposite Maynard. Paul Hurst, veteran screen character comedian has a prominent part and others in important roles include Harry Bhutan, Hal Salter, Tom Bay, J.P. Supporting this feature will bo the first of cinema art films. .1928 season, when they present “Impctunes Youth,” a human and compelling picture featuring all continental stars, headed by Conrad Vcidt and Elizabeth Bergner. Produced in Florence, every shot, is a real one, and the photography is pc/fcct. This picture had a very successful run in England and there is no doubt that its reputation will be endorsed in Wanganui. THE MAJESTIC “Ladies Must Dress,” screened at the Majestic Theatre on Saturday is one of the most entertaining pictures that have visited Wanganui for some time. Virginia Valli plays a difficult and unusual role as Eve, the sweet but somewhat dowdy heroine. As a stenographer of the “efficient” type tn Wand’s Department Store, she displays little interest in the pleasures and vanities of the r< x of the girl employees. preferring to succeed at her work in order that she may marry her fiancee, Joe, a handsome young shipping clerk in the same store. As the day of the firm’s annual picnic approaches all attention centres on wuat Eva, who is regarded as a frump will wear lor the occasion. Alaizie, her friend, the lively little blonde wife of Ail (une of the store s salesmen) endeavours without success to persuade Eva lo buy a tricky outfit, whose istylishness lies principally in its scantiness buL when the great day arrives and Joe, aghast at nis fiancee’s getup. pleads a headache. Maizie institutes a campaign of leform, finally managing to modernise Eva s appearance. 'Hie junior partner, a good-na-tured man, with an eye for female charm, is not slow to notice the change in his stenographer and the latter dares not refuse his attentions lor fear of losing her job. Matters reach a climax when Ward invites Maizic to his flat and Eve follows, cioseiy pursued by doe and Art, who have grown suspicious. However, all cu..;* ndppily. Eva has learnt her lesson ihaL “.Ladies Must Dress.” Lawrence Gray has the main supporting part in this film, which, though for i lie most part comedy, has moments of profounds pathos. Thu supporting feature is “Irish Hearts.''’ Here at last is a comedy which does not caricature but characterises. Here are the Irish as they are. May McAvoy has never appeared so altogether adorable and Lnai is saying a great deal. We remember her in “Lady Fan” and “Matinee La»dies,” and many others. Her portrayals are always like cameos. But as Patsy Shannon —the colleen who leaves Ireland to find her lover Emmett, in America, and instead find hard work, sorrow, struggle and ’to counteract all the bad luck (which came about by the loss of a shamrock brooch) —Timmie O’Shay —he is irresistible). “Irish Hearts” will please you. whoever you are. It is a play for anywhere, anytime. See “Irish Hearts” by all means! Delightful music is provided by the Majestic Orchestra, under Air Fred Stokes.
