COOKS’ STRIKE
CONFERENCE ASKED Owners Place Little Hope in the Move TERMS VERY DEFINITE [ By Telegraph—Per Press Assn.—Copyright J [ Australian Press Assn. ] Received May 18, 10.30 p.m. MELBOURNE, May 18. The Council of the Trades Unions telephoned the Shipowners' Association asking if the latter would grant a conference to discuss the cooks' dispute, but were informed that nothing could be done in the matter until the chairman of the Association, who is in Sydney returned, when the request wouid be placed before him. Individual shipowners, however, point out that even if a conference is granted it could be taken as no groat guarantee that peace is in sight, as the owners’ recent telegram to Mr Tudehope, made it quite clear to Mr there could be no settlement unless t*ie men made a sincere move to man the ships and agreed to abolish the roster system.
At a late hour the maritime conference carried a resolution that the Australian Council of Trade Unions in conjunction with the committee of the Maritime unions open negotiations with the shipowners for a settlement of the cooks’ dispute.
