RACING AND CHASING

WINTER MEETING CONCLUDES Century Hurdle Race May Furnish Guide to Ellerslie Form Though there will be only one cross-country event on the programme to-day for the conclusion of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting, some good jumping will be witnessed, for in addition to the Grandstand Steeplechase the Century Hurdle Race will be staged. As the Wanganui meeting is the last before the Ellerslie Great Northern fixture early in June special interest attaches to it. The fields are reviewed as follows:

11.45 Peneus .. ..11 7 Mister Gamp Id 13 Shininp Armour Id 10 Troilus .... 9 12 Peshwa .... 99 Rafa 9 2 Glengariff .. 9 0 Our Jack .. 90 Ballyfarnon .. 9 0 Hyme«trason .. 9 0 Whisosne .. 9 0

(By “ KESTREL ”). RATA HACK HURDLE HANDICAP

Of 175 sovs.; one mile and a-half. The Rata Hack Hurdles will be contested by a held of eleven, the majority of these having been seen out in the Kaitoke Hack Hurdles on Thursday. Newcomers are Peneus, Troilus, Ballyfarnon and Whisogne. Peneus and Troilus contested the open hurdle race the first day and it may be that Troilus will take on the Century Hurdles to-day. Mister Gamp was early out of the contest for the Kaitoke Hurdles, and as he meets the winner, Peshwa, on Slbs. better terms there, seems little doubt as to what will be favourite again. Peneus, Troilus (if he starts), Peshwa, Glengariff and Our Jack must all have chances but they may be summed up as follows: MISTER GAMP. PENEUS, PESHWA.

BALGOWNIE HACK HANDICAP

Of 175 so vs; about two miles. Another field of eleven will face the starter for the Balgownie Hack, which prior to this year commenced the day s proceedings, and first day's form may be expected to shed light on the problem. In the Connolly Handicap Kawhakina finished behind the bunch that was next to the placed horses and may be better suited by the company and as he is a typical Kilbroney when it comes to a finishing effort he should be well supported. Avro may improve with his race, while Royal Acre is a newcomer who may do well. Bisox ran into second place behind Kawhakina at Hawera over eight and a half furlongs and will be as well suited by the distance to-day as anything else. Royal Elm will do better than Thursday’s display, while of the others most can be expected of King Mart and Gasnapper. The best-backed division may consist of KAWHAKINA. ROYAL ELM, BISOX.

CENTURY HURDLE HANDICAP

Of 350 sovs., about two miles. 1 here are nine acceptors, one less than the number that contested the May Hurdles on Thursday, while last year there were also nine runners. To-day the rest appear overshadowed by the Southerner, Aberfeldy, and the Quin Abbey gelding is looking so well that ' there seems little likelihood that the public will fail to make him their first choice. Red Fuchsia did not have a run on Thursday but he will be well supported. Perle de Leon was a disappointment the first day, as was Pouri, but both can do better. Euchre is outclassed in hi: "resent form, while Vexatious does not appeal. Matu will go well again and if Troilus starts he is going to be hard to catch. Braeman has a chance. One comes back to ABERFELDY, MATU, PERLE DE LEON.

1.55 Puwhero . 11 15 Tuki .. ..11 5 Maunjra .. ..11 3 Passin* Thro’ 11 0 Peter Maxwell 10 y Polyphemus 9 7 Mixed Heather 9 7 Royal Heather 9 3 Risk .... 90 Son o’ Mine 9 0

GRANDSTAND STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP

Of 300 sovs.; about two miles and a half. Only seven contested the Wanganui Steeplechase but there are ten acceptors for the Grandstand Steeples to-day. Of these ten Tuki, Maunga, Passin’ Through and Peter Maxwell were in the Wanganui Steeplechase, and of the quartet most improvement may be expected from Peter Maxwell, who won the Grandstand Steeples last year after an indifferent display on the opening day. Tuki will go on to better things and Maunga should be able to show that he would have been close up to Brigadier Bill on Thursday but for the mishap that caused him to be pulled up. Puwhero is a newcomer who won nicely at Hawera last Saturday and he should carry his 11.13 and Alan McDonald in dashinstyle this afternoon. Polyphemus has been schooled ove*r the “country” but Mixed Heather gave a good display in the Hack Steeples the first day and will be prominent to-day. Bisk does not appeal but Boy al Heather and Son o Mme are given jumpers’ chances. The public mav prefer them thus:— PUWHERO, MIXED HEATHER, PETER MAXWELL.

EMPIRE HANDICAP (If 97S czw-e . -1 .. ■ i- .

W 2 .'“ sovs -; one mile and a distance. The principal flat race is the Empire Handicap, run over a mile and a distance. Twelve months ago this was won by that brilliant little mare, Civility, who had run prominently in the Connolly the first day’ and it may be a good guide for to-day’s race to look to some candidate that showed up behind the place-getters on Thursday, rather than to expect the winner, Horomea, to repeat her performance of leading from end to end. Beaumont was fourt but there were others who might have headed nim. Glenross is a great second-day horse and was not far away on Thursday, while Black Mint mav improve Blimp ran his best race to date in the Connolly, just Somg under by a short neck, and he will be consistent, hoyal Damon was not in the best of positions at the bend and may get a better run to-day. Lin Arlington, Waslerlust and Captain Gazeley are newcomers but they do not appeal. When backers get to work they mav •iecide for GLENROSS, BLIMP, ROYAL DAMON.

FAREWELL HACK FLAT HANDICAP Of 175 SOVS • siv

Ut aovs.; six furlongs. The smallest field of the day is set down to contest ae hack sprint, in w'hich Keddar is to carry number one ■ jotn. The Arrowsmith gelding has been a very consist- • nt performer, being placed on about a dozen “occasions this season, and he will perhaps he better suited by the distance than he was in the Borough Hack last Saturday at Hawera. Chelone was not prominent on Thursday but Tee Simple’s finishing run in the Purua Hack appeared to indicate that he would have been the winner had he got a clear run through. He will not lack support to-day. Callanmore finished on well and will improve, hut of those below him on the card Eka and Bright Comet strike one as the only pair with anything to commend them. To reduce them to three one must declare FEE SIMPLE, KEDDAR, CALLANMORE.

WINTER OATS HANDICAP

Of 250 BOVS.; six furlongs. As is often the case, the final event will be a very heavy betting race, for ** it not the punter’s “Kecoverv Stakes?” Fifteen are set out on the card and the numher includes the placed horses in the open sprint on fhursday. Of the trio Benzora may show most improvement, for he got away indifferently in thh Borough Handicap and then finished well to get into third position. a head in front of Limited. Royal Damon will probably start in the Empire Handicap. Silvermine may not do so well at a rise of 81bs. and Arrow Lad is a newcomer. Tea Time will be improved by Thursday’s outing and so will Limited, who ran fourth in the Borough. First Aere disappointed on Thursday, as also did Broad Acre and Royal Game. Covent Garden must not be discarded because of his display on Thursday, for he struck trouble on the turn and was not knocked about when his chance was hopeless. Bonogne and Moa Bird may run well, as also will Lady’s Boy, who is possessed of plenty of pace. The trio that make most appeal are LIMITED. BENZORA, COVENT GARDEN.
