WENDY’S LITTLE WORKERS
MAKING A USEFUL BOOK CARRIER. My Dear Children, A book carrier is an interesting thing to make, and would form a jolly present for a friend who reads a good You will need a piece of firm canvas, or heavy linen, about twenty inches long by nine inches wide, (those measurements give you a handy-sized carrier, but of course you can make it any size you prefer.) You ’ll also need a piece of casement cloth, exactly the same size, for the lining, and some scraps of linen and casement cloth for the handles. Diagram A shows the measurements given. Lay the casement cloth on the linen, with the two right sides facing each other, and sew tho two pieces of material together, leaving a few inches unsown one side, so that you can turn the case right side out. Stitch up this opening very neatly when you’ve turned the case, and fold each end over three inches from the edge, so as to make the flaps—see Diagram B. Sew tho flaps down as indicated by the dotted lines. Now make two handles about two inches wide out of twelve-inch strips of linen and lining; sew each couple together, and then turn the tubes so formed right side out, (if you push o
pencil through you’ll find it quite easy.) When you’ve finished both handles—be sure to make them exactly the same size—sew one firmly to each flap, about two inches from the edge. Your case is now finished, the book covers being slipped into tho flaps. If any Wendy lady decides that the carrier would look ' nicer embroidered with a little posy on one side, as shown in the sketch, she must do this before sewing in the lining. Pennies laid on the stuff, pencilled round, and then worked in button-hole stitch, or outlined with chain-stitch in bright wools, will suggest jolly little flowerets, and you ean add black stem-stitch stalks. On a blue linen case, flowers of orange and purple would look very gay, and blue and scarlet flowers will suit a ease of buff-colour. Wendy’s Dressmaker.
