DEAD TAPIRS

ANIMALS FOR ZOO DIE EN ROUTE TO AUCKLAND. [ Special “ Chronicle ” Service ] AUCKLAND, May 17. Two tapirs which left Singapore by the Sussex died on the voyage. They were intended for the Auckland Zoo, but evidently they could not bear the cold weather.

It was stated this morning that one of the animals was ill before it left Singapore. When the Sussex encountered cold and strong weather on the way down the Queensland coast the animals both succumbed. Another addition to the zoo brought by the Sussex is an old species of tiny wild ox. It was also obtained at Singapore. This animal arrived in the best of health. Four tiny monkeys brought by the Sussex will go to Dunedin. Two others died on the way out.
