BANGITIKBI HUNT OPENING OF THE SEASON [ Special * Chronicle ” Service ] A beautiful afternoon favoured the members of the Rangitikei Hunt for i he opening of the season, ami when a start was made from Mr Francis Me- 1 Lean’s residence at Springrove there were about 50 followers. I The hounds were soon on the scent of a hare near the plantation ana after a short run the hare crossed the road into Mr A. Stuart’s property, ; where pussy was lost. The master doubled back to Springrove and after drawing a blank in the first paddock a hare was put up in the adjoining padtdock and raced through several paddocks towards Heaton Park gates, the scent being lost on the Union Line road. After a detour, a fresh hare was started in the homestead paddock, which led the followers through a rush paddock into a hay paddock towards the Union Line, where the quarry doubled back into the home paddock. The hounds got on to the scent again, but the hare eventually evaded the pursuit, after giving its followers a good run over a fine lot of jumps, which were negotiated, without any mishap# It was a good afternoon’s sport with plenty of jumping. Among the followers were: The Master (Mr D. G. Riddiford) on Rocket, Deputy Master H. J. Cameron on Some Day, F. McLean on Canberra, and W. J. Simpson on Grcyleg, D. Cameron on Red Spider, R. Cameron on The Don, J. H. McLean on Franfelt, P. Briant on Glenlivcn, G. Briant on Moriarty, W. W. Wilson on Mode, L. T. McLean on Sultan, K. Lourie on Wcka, D. Simpson on Ben, J. Goodwin on Nurmi, G. Smith on Monarch, D. McLean on Donal, Jack Simpson on Sheik, Brian Simpson on Red Hawk, Roger Simpson on a black, A. H. Linton on Risk, M. McCaul on Sir Apa, S. Trotter on Te Maire, L. J. Javis on Opupae, W. McLean on a bay, A. Goodwin (huntsman) on Borrus and several other young followers on ponies. Miss Bouinan on Mataroa, Miss B. Gaisford on Pohutu, Miss Pcrrett on Morihaha, Miss Dorothy Rogers on Taffy and Miss Cameron on a black The following visitors were also present from the Manawatu Hunt: Messrs L. H. Collinson (Master) on Birkenose, Stewart Bailey on The Artist, G. Shannon on Terehu, and J. J. Waller (huntsman) on Pawa. Among those on foot were: Messrs Charles Roger, A. T. Gatrell, WestAwdry, F. C. F. McKay, A. Way and ’ Mrs E. C. Gaisfond, Mrs D. Simpson, i Misses TJ. Smith Hewitt. The followers were hospitably entertained by Mr and Mrs Francis McLean at afternoon tea. VALEDICTORY At the closing of Marton Junction School for the holidays on Friday, Miss Sybil Parker, B. A., was farewelled by teachers and pupils on her resignation to take up a position in the Wairoa High School. Mr F. A. Hcmpleman, headmaster, referred to the high esteem in which Miss Parker was held and wished her success in secondary school work, at the same time handing her a handsome silver and tortoise shell toilet set as a token of esteem from her fellow teachers and scholars. Little Rita Walkley having presented a bouquet, Miss Parker thanked all for the gilt, assuring them of the happy time she had experienced while un the staff of tho school. THE NAVY LEAGUE At the breaking-up ceremony at the Marton Junction School on Friday afternoon, Mr F. Purnell of the local branch of the Navy .League, presented (ho school with a trained picture entitled “The Night Before the Battle of Trafalgar.” Briefly referring to the British Navy of 1805 and today, Mr Purnell said he hoped the picture would not only remind the children of what the Navy meant to the nation but also interest them in history generally. RANGITIKEI RUGBY UNION The Rata thirds failed to put in an appearance at Marton on Saturday anu Athletic therefore won the game by default. Senior matches resulted as follows: Rata beat Hunterville by six points to nil at Hunterville; Marton drew with Bulls at Bulls, there being no score. These were the only two matches played in the senior grade in the Rangitikei on Saturday. The Maori i chorus ‘ ‘ Matangi ’ ’ was then rendered i and the programme concluded with the i school song. At the conclusion, the Rev. D. MoIvor, thanked the artists at both evening’s entertainments for their assist- 1 ance and also to all those who had as- 1 sisted. ' ] MUNICIPAL PICTURES Those who have longed for something new in the theme of western productions should be gratified at the unusual story at the hands of the Charles Rogers Company. Ken Maynard, the cowboy hero wonder-rider, is starred in “The Devil’s Sad/lle,” to be screened at the Marton Town Hall to-night. A. AND P. ASSOCIATION The committee of the A. and P. Association met on Saturday night, Mr A. S. Coleman presiding. Mr E. R. Galpin was appointed delegate the Royal Show Society and Messrs Coleman and B. Morris delegates to the North Island A. and P. conference at Palmerston North on June 21. The draft report and; balance sheet presented by the secretary were approved and will be submitted to the annual meeting. Officers Nominated Nominations were then announced for the various offices. Mr Coleman stated that he did not intend, to seek re-election, and Mr B. Morris was nominated as his successor. This was agreed to and other nominations were received as follows: Vice-presidents, Messrs C. E. Vile, H. Smith, T. Stevens, S. W. Morrison; honorary treasurer, Mr F. H. R. Brice; committee, Messrs E. C. Nctherclift, F. Rickman, E. Thoms, S. Gray, J. H. McLean. W. F. Stevens, E. R. Galpin, A. S. Coleman, E. Stent, J. Griffin, H. Collier and A. Wing.
