One candidate in P.S.E. examination was second in Wapganui district, and one candidate was second for Wanganui and fifth for Dominion in junior national scholarship. In the primary department, 94 per cent, of the pupils in Standard VI. gained proficiency certificates. Swimming certificates to the number of 57 wore gained by pupils during the year. Those were made up as follows: Merit 9, proficiency 11, learners 37. As a result of the operetta staged in April last, a gramophone was purchased as well as a good supply of records, and a bugle band was established. A fund was also created for the establishment of an infants’ playground, of which the first instalment, the sand pits, were ready for occupation. The primary roll number had fallen considerably, owing partly to the very large Standard VI. that went out last year, partly to families leaving the town in search of work, and partly, probably, owing to the amount of sickness among those just of school age, and 'who, as a result had not yet begun. It stood at 347, or 31 lower than at the same time last year. The secondary department, however, showed an increase, the roll number (85) being a record.
