THE CUSTOMS SCANDAL FRANKLIN REMANDED FOR SENTENCE [ Per Prea? Association. 1 AUCKLAND, April 23. At the Police Court William George Franklin, receiving agent, appeared on thirteen charges of receiving and theft, twelve being in relation to liquor and one concerning a case of oil. Counsel for accused pleaded guilty to two charges of theft and three of receiving goods knowing them to have been dishonestly obtained. The case excited great interest and the Court was crowded. Customs officials were present and heard the Magistrate again comment upon the laxity alleged to prevail amongst Customs officials with regard to certificates given in respect of broken bottles received in shipment. Accused was remanded till 2 p.m. for sentence.
