A Wellington message states that n taxi-driver, named Alexander John Burn os, aged 24, was fined £lO and had his license cancelled for three months for being drunk while in charge of a motor.
Two attempts to make easy money in Dunedin by a young motor driver, Albert Smelt, by forging cheques for £2O and £25 in the names of a school inspector and hotelkeeper respectively, led to his appearance in Court. He pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
An Invercargill message states that Frederick Ross, married, aged 43 years, lies in the Southland Hospital unconscious through being run into by a train at Morton-Mains on Saturday evening when returning from Invercaigill on a jigger. He is not expected to recover.
A large station property at Tangihau, 32 miles from Gisborne, of 15,157 acres, with 18,000 sheep and 1900 cattle, was offered at auction last week. The bidding started with an offer of £lll,OOO and after a pause a bid of £115,000 was put in on behalf of the mortgagee, the Bank of Australasia, to whom the property was knocked down.
The Poppy Day street collection in Auckland realised £1392. Returns to come are expected to bring the total to £2OOO, eclipsing last year ’s record of £1950. The results to hand in Wellington, show £Bl2 Ils 7d. compared with £lOB7. With the amounts to come in the total will probably reach last year’s figures.
