WESTFIELD SALE [ Per Press ! AUCKLAND, April 19. At Westfield yesterday there was an average yarding of both ox and cow beef. The demand for the former Was not so keen and conscqucntyl values were easier. Cow and heifer beef, on the other hand, was firm at late rates Extra choice ox sold to 36s per J001b; choice and prime, 32s to 355; just killable 28s to 30s; prime young cow and ■heifer beef, 26s to 28s; just killable _3s to 255. There was scarcely an average yarding of sheep, which sold under very keen coinpctition, values being slightly firmer. Extra Lcu\j prime wethers made 36s 3d; heavy prim c £1 12s 6d to £1 14s Gd; medium £1 9s to £1 1.1 s; light and unfinished £1 6s 6d to £1 8s; extra heavy prime ewes £1 10-,; heavy prime ewes £l. 6s 6d to £1 8s; lighter £1 4s 6d to £1 6s; other ewes £1 2s to £1 3s 6d. There was a good yarding of lambs the majority of which were killable and met with a very neon demand at slightly advanced rates. Heavy prime lambs made £1 10s; medium £1 4s 6d to £1 7s; light £1 Is 6d to £1 3s. Calves were penned in average numbers, there being little or no change in values. Runners made £3 .15s to £4 15s; heavy venlers £4 to £4 12s; medium £3 5s to £3 17s; light £2 10s to £3; rough 16s to £1 8s; fresh dropped 6s to £1 4s. There was an average yarding of pigs with, values inclined to ease. Choppers made £2 10s to £3 15s; heavy baeoners £4 4s to £4 9s; light baconers £3 5s lo £3 10s; heavy porkers £2 15s to £3 4s; medium porkers £2 6s to £2 12s; light porkers £2 to £2 ss.
GOOD SALE AT BURNSIDE. [ Per Press Annoctalljn. 1 DUNEDIN, April 19. , Fat cattle were dearer at the Burnside stock sales yesterday, and good quality ewes advanced in price. Wethers remained firm at late rates, and pigs generally showed an improvement. Fat Cattle. —There were 285 in the yarding. Fairly mixed quality was shown. There were some nice yards of finished heifers and bullocks, but the proportion of iinlinished cattle was fairly large. The opening demand was fair at last sale’s values for finished cattle, but towards the close butchers became more keen, and heifers in particular sokl easily at advanced rates. Extra prime heavy bullocks made from £l5 10s to £l6 17s 6d, medium £l2 to £l4 10s, best heifers £9 to £lO 15s, medium £7 10s to £8 15s, best cows £9 to £9 15s, medium £7 15s to £8 10s; prime heavy bullocks made 35s per 1001 b., prime light 37s 6d, heifers 32s 6d. cows and light heifers 20s to 255. Fat Sheep.—Two thousand two hundred and eighty wore penned. The quality w r as inixc»d, there being a fairly large number of medium ewes and wethers, together with a small proportion of prime heavy wethers and ewes. There was an improved opening demand for the best wethers from Is to 2s a hcatd, to ease later to about last week’s prices. The best ewes opened a shade firmer, to improve at the close of the sale. Other grades were unchanged. Extra heavy wethers made from 45s to 465., prime 40s to 425, medium 33s to 36s 9d light 26s to 30s, best heavy ewes 34s to 36s 3d, prime 30s to 335, medium 23s to 275, light 16s to 18s, inferior 10s to 14s, prime heavy wethers made 6|d per lb., prime light GAd, primes 6Jd, aged 4. Lambs.—Lambs penned totalled 636. There was a fairly good quality ranging from fair to prime. Most sorts were well grown. The demand for finished lambs was good, making up to last week’s rates. Grazier sorts were selling fairly well. Extra heavy lambs made from 36s to 37s 6d, prime 33s to 34s 9d. light 30s to 32s 3d, medium 25s to 275, unfinished 23s Gd to 245. The average price per lb. was lOd. Store Cattle.—There were about 280 store cattle, comprised for the most part ‘of cowr of varying quality, together with fifty two-year-old and three yearold fair steers. For good threc-year-olds and four-year-olds the demand was good, while inferior sorts found a slow sale. Best throe-year-old and four-year-old steers were fairly forward to £lO, mediums £7 17s Gd. to £8 ss. while good 2J-ycar-olds went up to £7 15s. Other sorts remained the same as last week.
Pigs.—Two hundred and thirteen fats and 64 stores. The quality was good, and improvement was shown in the prices.
