AWAPUNI CONCLUDES

CIMABUE’S STAKES WIN MANDANE TAKES TAMATETE HANDICAP. ROYAL DAMON TOO GOOD MISS PAT’S SPRINT SURPRISE By Glorious weather prevailed yesterday for the concluding day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting, an ideal autumn day attracting a good attendance. There was some interesting racing during the day and some of the finishes were very close. The Manan atu Stak s was by Cimabue, who outclassed the other live starters, but The Hawk, who won this event as long ago as 1921, gave backers of the favourite a bit of a scare over the final stages. The principal event, the Tamatete Handicap, saw Mandane score a popular victory, the Fordell mare being the elect of backers, but she did not have very much to spare from Hynanna and Tresham. Quite unexpectedly the consistent Miss Pat bobbed up in the open sprint to disconcert backers and incidentally return a very acceptable dividend, while the price returned by High Disdain in the two-year-old event was also a good one. Backers were able to sort out the winners with a greater degree of success than was the case on the opening day. five favourites being returned winners while another, Mount Marta, finished second. The totalisator showed a decrease on last year’s figures, the sum handled during the day being £22.689, against £25.016 on the concluding day last year, while the total for the meeting was £47,030, compared with £45,275 last year. A description of the day’s racing, together with details of the fields, follows: — Vexatious Beats the Favourite. Mount Marta (£407) was preferred in the opening event, the Kairanga Hurdles, but Ngata (£283), Braeman (£271) and Airtight (£265) were also supported. Whisogne was early in the lead but when they had jumped the first obstacle and had settled down he was closely attended by Mount Marta, Bonecto, Ngata, Airtight and Kilburn. Mount Marta w® the pilot past the stands the first time, being followed by Whisogne, Bonecto and Ngata, and into the back stretch the favourite was followed by Kilburn and Ngata. with Whisogne, Vexatious and Braeman nearest of the others. Kilburn ran to the front crossing the top but at the last fence Mount Marta was with him and Vexatious close up, Ngata following Braeman. Once over Vexatious wore down the favourite and won by three-quarters of a length, with Braeman, who came through on the rails, a neck away, clear of Kilburn. Ngata was fifth nnl Chri«sarfo next to finish. Moa Bird Improves. Moa Bird (£661) was confidently backed in the Lockwood Handicap to improve on her first day’s showing and her supporters duly collected. Orcades was the early leader from Le champ. Callanmore and Valuator, with Vigilance and Desert Lad next. Le Champ and Callanmore were in front half-way down the ' ack stretch, the pair being followed by Orcades, Desert Lad, Valuator, Vigilance and Moa Bird, but Callanmore had assumed the role of pilot crossing the top and they turned for home with the Absurd gelding in front of Le Champ. >esert Lad, Moa Bird and Orcades. Over the final stages the favourite asserted herself and held off Moutoa Wonder to win by a neck, with Callanmore a length and a-hnif away, just in front of Orcades. Desert T.ad was fifth and Vigilance next. Mandane Wins Big Handicap. Ths Tamatete Handicap was a very Hen betting race between Mundane '£s24', Tresham <£4Bo), Crown Area (£464), Mask (£426) and Hynanna i£396), while Limosa carried only £4l less than Hynanna. They _ot away to a good start and Vivo assumed the lead as they ran down the straight, being followed bv Mandane, Mask, Tresham, Hynanna and Perle de Leon, and as they turned for the back stretch Vivo was three lengths in front of Mandane, Mask. Crown Area, Tresham and Hynanna. At the four furlongs .Vivo wps still in the lend but Mask

and Mandane were In close attendance and Hynanna and Tresham at the heat of the others. Vivo came back to the field crossing the top and Mandane turned for home just in front of Hy nanna, with Vivo, Addlepate and Tro sham their nearest attendants. Hynanna flung out a strong challenge tc the favourite in the run to the judge but Mandane hung >n well to gain the verdict by half a length, with Tresham a similar distance away and Crown Area close up. Vivo, Mask and Li mosa were together in a bunch behind the fourth horse. In a Class by Himself. Royal Damon (£710) and Duke Ab bey (£615) were the only pair backed with any spirit and a good thing the

favourite proved. Kilpcron and Lin Arlington led Paul Lucerne and Duke Abbey out from the tapes but Duke Abbey was first on to the course proper from Whenuanui, Wanderlust, Lin Arlington. Paul Lucerne and Royal Damon. As they raced across the top Duke Abbey and Lin Arlington were in the van but Royal Damon was close up to them and once heads were turned for home the favourite showed his class by coming away to "in comfortably by three lengths. Kilpcron, who had fol- z lowed Royal Damon through at the bend, was a neck in front of Duke , Abbey, with Huikai right up. Lin Arlington, Vesperus and Whenuanui were next to pass the post. Cimabue a Hot Favourite. Of the investments on the Alanawatu Stakes Cimabue (£1127) was entrusted with nearly half the total, Raasay (£556) being twice as well backed as any of the others. Miss Ransom was Just as smart as Cimabue out from the tapes and the pair were followed to the course proper by RaaFreehold, The Hawk, and Thaw. Running down the back stretch Cimabue was allowed to drop in behind Miss Ransom, Raasay and Freehold but Reed kept the favourite handy to Raasay and Miss Ransom crossing the top and the trio were followed by Thaw, The Hawk and Freehold into the ■ straight. When called upon once in line for the judge Cimabue responded well but then The Hawk flung out a challenge and the favourite was kept at it to win by a bare length, with Raasay a good length away in third place. Thaw was close up to the placed horses and Miss Ransom was next to finish. High Disdain’s Narrow Win Silver Rule (£613) and the Knight- ' ike-Connoisseur bracket (£463) were the elect of backers n the Cloverlea Nursery but -tone of them was equal to getting into a place. Kaihoro, showing a ton of speed, soon hit the front from High Disdain, Knightlike, Silver Rule, Goldbag and Toxeuma, the field soon stringing out. Turning out of the back stretch Kaihoro was still in front

of High Disdain, with Ridgemount, Toxeuma, Silver Rule, Knightlike and Briar Root following. Kaihoro turned for home ahead of Ridgemount and High Disdain, with Toxeuma at the head of the others, but once they straightened up High Disdain ran up to Kaihoro. The latter was not done with, however, and came again only to go under by a head, Concentrate finishing third, two lengths away. Briar j Root was fourth and Silver Rule, Toxe- [ uma and Ridgomount followed in that I order. Miss Pat Consistent. Nine were saddled up for the open -•print, the Borough Handicap, and Arrow Lad (£633) was £l5O better backed than anything else. Backers were again astray, for in the finish Miss Pat who was at a good price, beat the lot. Silvermine and Kaiti were prominent when they settled down, being followed by Vast Acre, Dobbin and Broad

Acre, Benzora losing a lot of ground at the start. Silvermine showed the way out of the back stretch to Broad Acre, Kaiti. Benzora and Vast Acre and in this order they turned for home, Benzora running out wide on the bend. Vast Acre came through on the rails at the distance but then Miss Pat sailed up on the outer to win, going away, by a length, with Vast Acre half a length in front of Silvermine, who was third. First Acre and Broad Acre were close up and Dobbin and Kaiti next to finish. A Slashing Finish. There was only a five-horse field for the concluding event, the Adderstone Hack, but it provided a stirring finish, the favourite, Flying Shot (£1134), winning by the barest of margins, shining Star, Flying Shot and Hypnotic was the order out of the straight but running into the back stretch the favourite was in the lead with Hypnotic alongside him and Shining Star next. The order was unchanged as ihey turned for home but Hypnotic headed Flying Shot at the distance. The favourite, on the rails, came again, however, and with Aropeta challenging on the outer there was a great tussle over the last fifty yards, Flying Shot getting the verdict hy a nose from Hypnotic and Aropeta, whom the judge was unable to separate. Shining Star was close up in fourth position. FULL DETAILS. KAIRANGA HURDLES HANDICAP. (Of 200 sovs; 1% miles.) s—Vexatious,5 —Vexatious, 9.10, H. Burt 1 I—Mount1 —Mount Marta, 9.6, J.
