MAORI CHAMPIONS

NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT RESULTS OF HASTINGS' GATHERING The final stages of the New Zealand Maori Lawn Tennis Association’s tournament were reached on Saturday morning after experiencing real tennis weather. Several changes were recorded in regard; to the championship events, P. H. Jones, formerly of Wanganui, but now of Auckland, who w r as for the last two years champion and holder of the Ayers Cup, was defeated in the top semi-final by E. Howel], of Arawa Matate. Aliss Hale, of Takitimu (Gisborne), the ladies’ singles champion and holder of the Hine rape Cup, was defeated by Aliss T. D. Newton in the final of that event.

The brothers Jones, last year’s holders of the men’s doubles championship, were defeated by Tukere and Potae. after playing the most interesting and exciting contest of the series. The combined championship was an easy win for Potae and Aliss T. D. Newton, who defeated Al. R. Jones and Mrs P. H. Jones in straight sets. The Wanganui team which took part at the tournament gave a very satisfactory display. Tukere and Potae won the men’s doubles championship, while in the singles, Tukere was unfortunate in meeting Potae in the semi-finals and he sportingly retired in favour of the younger man, who, however, succumbed to the fast onslaught of the Arawa man. In the Alorchu Turoa Cup contest, which is played under Davis Cup rules, Tukere and Potae, by superb play, won against the Arawa team in the final, being opposed by the brothers Howell. Four singles were played resulting as follows: Tukere defeated E. Howel) (this year’s champion) 7—5, 6—3; D. Potae defeated E. Howell 6—4, 6—3; Tukere lost to P. Howell, 6—4, 5—7, I—6; D. Potae defeated P. Howell 6—3, fi—2. Thus the Wanganui team won. the Alorchu Turoa Cup by three matches to one and the doubles unplayed. .

The other members of the team who fared well were Alesdames McLeod and Te Iluia, who reached the finals of the ladies’ championship doubles. A. AleLcod, of the Pipiriki Club, won the men’s plate after a very hard and interesting match with W. McKay, of Gisborne. The complete list of the finals ifl fl# follows: Championship Events.
