LOST GOLF BALLS

AN UNDESIRABLE PRACTICE Although it is against an unwritten rule of every golf club and is undoubtedly a most undesirable practice, many players still continue to buy sec-ond-hand balls from boys on the links. Possibly now members do not understand why they should not buy sec-ond-hand balls from boys on the links. If players are always ready and willing to buy these balls, this creates a market and is a big inducement for boys who know where a ball is to refrain from informing a player. When the player has given it up as lost, the boy retrieves the ball for the purpose ot selling it later. Players should not only refrain from buying second-hand balls, but when approached by boys should point out to them that, strictly speaking, they have no right to the balls that they have found, which are the property of the members of the club.
