FREE TRADE
EMPIRE POLICY AN UNLIKELY ID. AL. (A.P.A.-Sun)-VICTORIA (8.C.), March 30. “It would be ideal for the Empire Io have among its various States and between the Dominions the Motherland system of free trade,’’ declared Sir Robert Horne to-day. “Empire free trade would allow the complete uninterrupted ilow of commerce between the Dominions, as dues thy system of interstate trading in the United States, which gains largely thereby, keeping ihe vase markets to itself, but free trade within the Empire represents the greatest world’s trade unit.” He declared that the Empire free trade ideal was unlikely in this generation, as the various Dominions had their own individual interests to consider, and through tariffs raise revenue. Accordingly the must consider these particular interests. Ho declared that certain industries required protection in one Dominion, and there were others which may need it in another. Consequently they must for the present work along lines visionary and more practical by following the preference method within the Empire and by more firmly establishing the trade contacts of each unit with ■‘.he other.
