U.S. AND THE LEAGUE
CONTRIBUTION TO EXPENSES In contributing £3,500 toward the . secretarial expenses of the League of • Nations Conferences in which the I United States participated, the State' Department replies to eriticiasm of its | long delay by declaring that th c League authorities neglected to send in the 1 bill despite repeated requests. The | American contribution is the same as 1 thc British, but State Department offi-1 cials point out that private American j contributions to the League expenses; 1 total almost £500,000. i Thc reluctance of the League to render a bill to thc United States, it is said, was due to the belief of some European enthusiasts that they could “shame” the United States into i political commitment with thc League if a report were widely circulated here that the richest country in the world contributed not a penny to th;League’s support.
