OVER TWO MILES TIME RECORD ESTABLISHED AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND FIGURES. What can be regarded as a bright feature connected with the Australian and New Zealand record for two miles is that the four horses whose names are associated therewith during the past eight years accomplished their feats under weight, remarks Phaeton. The following arc the particulars bearing on the respective feats of horses who have during the period named stood out as record-breakers over two-mile journeys:— 3m 22|s .. Sydney Cup, run. April 5, 1920—Kennaquhair, 9.5. .6m 22j .. Melbourne Cup. run November 3, .1925 —Windbag, 6m 22} . . Melbourne Cup, run November 2, 1925—Spearfelt, 6m 22} . . Trentham Gold Cup, run March 17, 1928 Star Stranger, 9.4. Record Times at Trentham. Trentham racecourse is placed attractively on the map by reason of five records (Australian and New Zealand) having been put up there, viz:—rFour furlongs.—4ss, Gloaming (9.1), January, 1921. Six furlongs. —Im 9 4-55., The Hawk (9.2), January, 1922. One mile three furlongs.—2m 17s, Star Stranger (9.5), January, 1927. One and three-quarter miles.—2m 57’,5. Commendation (8.7). March. .1927. Two miles.—Star Stranger, 3iu 22}s (9.4), March, 1928. NOTES AND COMMENTS By “Kestrel.” Octochord arrived by train yesterday afternoon from Eltham to complete his preparation for the forthcoming Wanganui trotting meeting. The Masterton, Whangarei and Southland fixtures will attract the attention of racegoers next week, but most interest in the Wanganui district will centre on the local trotting fixture next Thursday and Saturday. Elysianor’s Win. It was pleasing to see Elysianor win the Sansou Hack Hurdles at Bulls on Thursday, this making the third success registered by the Elysian gelding in six weeks. Elysianor won on the second day at the Taranaki meeting in February, on the first day at the Wanganui fixture, and again on Thursday. F. Lind deserves congratulations on turning his charge out in such good condition. At no stage of the race did he look like getting beaten. The Top-Weightis. In seven out of the eight events at Bulls on Thursday the top-weight returned a dividend. Elysianor, Fee •Simple and Ruanui were winners, while supporters of Mendip, Royal Acre, Vast Acre and Helotis lost over their investments. Vivo was the only contestant carrying number one saddle-cloth to miss the money and she was third in the principal event. An investment of £1 on each top-weight would have given the backer the handsome profit of £1 15s. f A Hot Favourite It is not often that such' a hot favourite as Mendip gets beaten in a hack race, and those who supported the Bisogne gelding got a shock when the figures went up, as they lost more than half their investment. Experience will perhaps teach punters never to lay odds on.

Large Hurdles Field. The Trial Hurdle Race of £4OO, which is a fresh event at the Auckland Racing Club’s autumn meeting, has attracted the large entry of 33. The race in question is confined to horses that have not won a hurdle race of the value of £250 or hurdle races of the collective value of £5OO at time of nomination. The distance of the race is a mile and three-quarters.

Satrap for Ellerslie. The New Zealand St. Leger winner Satrap figures among me entrants for the President's Handicap (1-J miles), which figures as the opening event to be decided at the Auckland Racing Club's autumn meeting on April 7. Satrap’s second engagement at the autumn meeting at Ellerslie is in the Great Northern St. Leger.

Mithra Not Good Enough' Few horses were backed at Trentham on Saturday with greater confidence than Mithra, but the Australian Sun filly was not good enough. She had been finishing on so well over five furlongs on the first day that it was expected she would win with a furlong extra to go. However, Episode was far superior, and Prickles also accounted for her. Prickles is a nice filly belonging to Sir George Clifford, and is by Panmure from Brainbletye. She should not be long off the winning list in the South Island.

More Breathing Trouble. It was expected that Ruffles, who hag been off the scene for 15 months, would make an early appearance, but some little time must elapse before ho will race again. The Quin Abbey gelding was operated upon for respiratory troubles last week by Dr. W. C. Ring, so that it will he six or seven ■weeks at least before he resumes work. It is to be hoped that the operation will enable Ruffles to regain his best form, because he is a good galloper.

Taken to Sydney Mr W. T. Hazlett's two-year-old filly, Flicker, by Paper Money from Illume, was taken to Sydney last week by F. Waddell, who will race her for her owner on •Sydney pony courses. She is a very speedy galloper, who should have no difficulty in winning races among the ponies in Australia.

An Early Possibility Black Mint registered a striking performance in the Autumn Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, and with better fortune during the running would have returned a dividend. He put in some good work over the finishing stages, and is evidently partial to a distance. He is a likely starter in the Great Autumn Handicap, and can be ticked off as one of the early possibilities for the popular mile and a-half event.

Shirley for the Easter Handicap. Present intentions are to essay a second attempt to win the Great Easter Handicap with Shirley, and she will be brought south by S. Waddell. By her two displays at Wellington Shirley gave the impression of slipping back, as she failed to sec out the distance in either event. Her existing form certainly does not suggest a repetition of their attractive performance at Riccarton last year.

Not a Stayer. The fact of Great Charter having finished unplaced in the New Zealand St. Leger and a like performance entered against his name for the Autumn Handicap run at Trentham last Saturday* must be regarded as further proof that the son of King John lacks the staying quality, writes Phaeton. Great Charter can gallop out a mile in bold style, but until ho accomplishes something beyond a journey of eight furlongs it will be as well to regard him merely as a miler. Limerick at Roisehill. Limerick is expected to make a reappearance under silk to-day in the Rawson Stakes, which event is set down for decision at the Rosehill meeting. The Rawson Stakes is run over a mile and a furlong nt weight-for-age. It is interesting to relate that in last year’s contest for the Rawson Stakes, Limerick defeated a select trio in Windbag, Valieare and Amounis is a solidly-run race. Change of Ownership.

Mister Gamp, who changed hands recently, will not go to the South Island as was expected, but will remain at Awapuni and be trained by his old mentor, J. P. Coyle. His new owner is Mr E. Collins, a brother of the former owner. Mr Collins also races Arrow Lad.

The Price was Too High. Satrap, who scored a runaway victory in the St. Leger and was responsible for the Australian and New Zealand record made by Star Stranger in the Trentham Gold Cup, has taken the fancy of an Australian buyer. However, when asked to put a price on his three-year-old, Mr J. S. Barrett quoted

3,000 guineas, and to date a sale has not resulted. The Paladin gelding, who was the first of his sire's stock to go to public auction, fell to the bid of Mr Barrett for 140 guineas at the yearling sales, and at that price he can be termed one of the bargains of the salering, especially as he appears to hold a mortgage on the Great Northern St. Leger. After suffering a defeat by Thorndale in the Peninsula Cup at Motukarara, it seemed out of all reason to imagine Satrap as being capable of running Star Stranger to half a length in the Trentham Gold Cup at weight-for-age, but such is the glorious uncertainty that is attached to racing. Limerick’s Engagements.

The races in which Limerick is engaged at New South Wales meetings this autumn are given as follows:—Today, Rawson Stakes (at Rosehill); March 31, Chipping Norton Stakes (at Warwick Farm); April 7, Ajutumn Stakes (at Randwick); April 11, All-Aged Stakes and Cumberland Stakes (at Randwick); April 14, King’s Cup (at Randwick). The All-Aged Stakes and Cumberland Stakes are run on the same day, and, as it is quite unlikely that Limerick will be required to contest both, the general opinion is that the All-Aged Stakes will prove to be the event in which he will race. Valkon s Accident

Valkon was run into by a motor car at To Aro.ha on Saturday when goJng back to the stal ’es fnoin the races, and was considerably knocked 1 about.
