BURNS CLUB

STEADY PROGRESS THE ANNUAL REPORT. At the general meeting of the Wan* ganui Burns Club to be held next Tuesday evening the following annual report will bo presented:— “Your committee in presenting the second annual report and statement of payments and receipts, compliments the club on a very successful year. “The, club has made steady progress during the year and the membership now stands at 126 financial members. “Attendances at the monthly meetings have been well maintained and the committee desires to thank members and friends for their loyal support. In keeping to the rules of the club the committee have set a very high standard at the monthly gatherings. The programmes have been Jn a marked degree instructive and sociable and to the speakers at our meetings and to the numerous kind friends who have assisted with the musical part of the programmes, the committee offers their gracious thanks. “The anniversary gathering was again held in the Opera House, the work of the committee being fully rewarded by the very liberal response of the public in attending in such large numbers to honour the ‘lmmortal Robert Burns.’ ’ The club donated £3 3s to the Wanganui Competitions Society and £2 2s to the Contest Fund of the Highland Pipe Band.

During the month of August the committee assisted to stage a Scottish concert in aid of the unemployed and wherever assistance has been required the committee have worthily upheld the Burns cult in trying to be a power for good in the community. “The entries for the Burns song sections at local Competitions were most gratifying and congratulations are again offered to Aliss Hilda Crysell, winner of the ladies’ section, and Air Wm. Gregg, winner of the gentlemen’s section. “During the year the ladies’ committee have rendered valuable assistance at our meetings and thanks are due. Aliss Al. Alitchell, Aliss Al. Calder and Airs J. Laird. “To Alics Phylis Murray, the club’s accompaniste, too much praise cannot be given for the very capable services she has rendered the club throughout the year. “The committee also desire to place on record the very valuable assistance given since the chib’s formation by our oldest member, Air George Mitchell, whom we may well delight to call the father of our club. “In accordance with the rules of the club the office-bearers retire, but are eligible for re-election.”
