TWENTY TO ONE
ODDS AGAINST LAYER SMALL-SCALE OPERATOR FINED. [ Per Press Association. J CHRISTCHURCH, March 22. Laying odds of twenty to one for first and seven to one for second, Leslie Joseph Shadbolt made several bets with a policeman in plain clothes at last Saturday’s trotting meeting at New Brighton. He took the constable completely into his confidence, telling him his system and his method of recording bets. When he came before Mr E.. Mosley, S.M., to-day, Shaclbolt pleaded not guilty, but after hearing the police evidence he altered his plea.to guilty. The Magistrate, having regard for Shadbolt’s delicate health, his poor circumstances and his crude methods of betting, which showed he was not a large-scale operator, imposed a fine of £lO, allowing a month in which to pay. Default was one month gaol. Shadbolt is a war pensioner and it was stated that he had lost money in his bookmaking venture.
