ROWING

CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA BIG FIXTUBE IN FEBURARY (By “The Bos’un”) The date for the holding of New Zealand Championship Regatta has finally been decided on, and Saturday, February 25. has been chosen as the most suitable day to stage these important events. Great interest will be manifested in the regatta and with the probable appearance of a crew from New South Wales, the Wanganui public will have the opportunity of seeing the cream of New Zealand and Australian oarsmen in action. Boisterous Weather. During the present week weather conditions have been against serious training, and the extremely rough water has been a great handicap to crews training for the respective club trophies. At times the river had the appearance of a turbulent sea, and effectively prevented boats from the city and suburban clubs taking the water for the usual evening spins. The Wray Eights. The contest, for Ihis trophy resulted in a win for N. Foster’s crew, who proved far too good for their opponents. The winners rowed with plenty of dash, and their physical condition appeared to be streets ahead of the other crews. This happy combination was no doubt responsible for such convincing victories. A Hefty Crew. Tlfe. Wanganui Club has selected its Youths crow and they appear to be a most formidable combination. Durje, the stroke, had several successes last, season, and with Carlson in the three seat, there should be no lack of weight in the boat. The other two members, Friend and A.itchison. both pull a. good oar, and altogether the crew will take some heading. U.B.C. Fours

The final of the Union Boat Club fours was held on Tuesday evening and victory went to F. Wiison's crew who defeated C. Aitkin after a good struggle. The winners ruliy deserved their victory as they wore a model of consistency throughout all the races. Rowing with a good swinging stroke, they made the boat travel along beautifully, and the two new members of the crew, T. Ditchfiold and J. Andrew, acquitted themselves remarkably well. Mitchieli Shield.

The final of this trophy was rowed by the Aramoho Club last Saturday, and resulted in a win for R. Abercrombie, who defeated D. Mill after a most exciting race. Mill appeared to have thd race in hand when one of his men caught a. “crab.” It was most unfortunate, as it perhaps spelled the difference between victory and defeat.

Ex-Champion Returns A visitor to the city is Archie Sharpe, member of the Union Boat Club, and former champion sculler of New Zealand, who is over from Sydney on a short holiday.

“Archie” is of the opinion that H. 11. Pearce, of New South Wales, is a world-beater, and should he turn professional would have no difficulty in defeating Major Goodsell, present holder of the world’s title.

The Collegiate School Crew. The crew from the Wanganui Collegiate School are swinging along nicely, and should give a good account of themselves when they meet Christ’s College on the Avon River in a. fortnight ’s time. There still appears to be a tendency to look out of the boat, a bad habit which should be corrected.
