FEILDING FORM REFLECTIONS ON THE RACING NOTES AND COMMENTS . By ' ‘ Kestrel’ ’) The Feilding spring meeting on Wednesday and Thursday was a very successful one. for which fact many factors must take credit. In the first place the programme was such as to attract owners and trainers and in addition the fixture comes after the Levin and Ashhurst gatherings and forms a circuit with the Woodville Club’s meeting next week. Then there must be considered the fact that the big carnival at Auckland is only three weeks distant and Feilding runners will be there in force. There were other reasons also for the large increase it the totalisator turnover, which would have been even greater if it had not been for the heavy showers on the concluding uay. Winning Jockeys. The most successful jockey at the meeting was L. G. Morris, who piloted the winners of five events, these being : Ruanui (twice), Vast Acre, Broad Acre land Vigilance, the last-named being the i winner of the second division of the Kowhai Hack Handicap. In all the Marton horseman had the mount on twelve starters and on seven occasions returned dividends to supporters, an investment of £1 on each of his mounts showing a profit of £lB 13s (id. Another jockey who had a good innings was J. Barry, who was on Kiosk, Covent Garden and Lirnosa, three Wanganui winners. B. H. Morris rode two winners and R. C. Miles, J. S. Potter, E. Warner. L. Tierney, T. .Green, IL McTavish, and A. MeCormac also succeeded in catching the judge’s eye. | Trainers of Winners. Of the seventeen events that were decided six were won by horses trained at Wanganui or in the vincinity. Walter Rayner led in Covent Garden (Flying Handicap) and Episode (Oroua j Nursery) and W. H. Dwyer had Kiosk (Feilding Stakes) and Lirnosa (Rongotea Hack), the latter being also owned by her trainer. The Fordell mentor, F. Tilley, provided the winner of the concluding event each day. this being the promising three-year-old gelding Ruanui. who was the only runner at the meeting to win a double. Other trainers who led in winners were J. P. Coyle (Mister Gamp), G. W- New (Broad Acre), H. Telford (Joy Bird), R. Brough (Royal Acre), J. Proctor (Vigilance), J. T. Morris (Vast Acre),

F. Tutchen (Pouri), W. Hawthorn* (Courageous),'E. W. Watson (Kilmiss) 11. J. Batten (The Raider) and J Brown (Bilvermine). How Favourites Fared.

The percentage of favourites to win was a fairly reasonable one considering the circumstances, five of the winners being the elect of backers. These were Broad Acre, Royal Acre, Covent Garden, Pouri, and Sil verm in e. In addition Pouri and Kilmiss made a return to their backers in the shape of a dividend for second place. The smallest dividend at the meeting was that paid to backers of Euphonium in the Feilding Cup, only a meagre proportion of their investments being returned when the Elysian gelding shared second honours with Wanderlust in that race. The largest return was that provided for supporters of Courageous, who ran second in the Aorangi Trial Plate. A Trio of Officials.

No mention of the Feilding meeting would be complete Without some reference to the work of three necessary officials. These were the handicapper, Mr W. P. Russell, the starter, Mr W.

U. Price, and the judge, Mr J. Cameron. The close finishes in many of the events must have been very gratifying to Mr Russell, who managed to conceal the winners well and yet i bring his fields together. The finish to ;the Flying Handicap on the opening day was a thrilling one, three of the starters going past the post practically in a line. Incidentally, these provided ja trying time for the judge, who I emerged with credit from the ordeals and hoisted his decisions promptly and

accurately. The work of Mr Price at the barrier was carried out with his usual painstaking care aud ability and, Though he had some large fields and green youngsters to despatch, he got them away in line. That some were slow le begin was not any fault of the starter. Brother to Mandane.

One of the best wins at the meeting was that registered by Covent Garden in the Flying Handicap on the opening day. The three-year-old son of Absurd and Cherry Mart, who is thus a halfbrother to Banart and Mandane, was

turned out in fine buckle by Walter Rayner aud was the elect of backers on the machine. Covent Garden took the lead from rhe outset and led to the turn for home, where he was temporarily snowed in when Royal Damon, Mireusonta and Epistle came round on the outside of him. Half-way up the straight an opening presented itself |and Barn’ was not slow in seizing tlio i opportunity. The favourite answered ;well and, putting in some telling I strides, snatched victory on the post by [a narrow margin. It was a close call I but the Absurd gelding responded so ’ well when pressure was applied that lit will encouarge his supporters in his future engagements. He will win more i good races before the season closes for j uis own er-breeder, Mr G. M. Currie. A Brilliant. Juvenile.

Another promising winner from I Walter Rayner’s stable is the two-year-old filly Episode, whose dam, Homage, I is a full-sister to Humbug, Epitaph and ? Eulalie, and also a half-sister to ComIniendation. There is sufficient in the I form displayed by the youngster to justify the opinion that she will, bei fore her two-year-old career closes, ■ rank among the best of her age in the Dominion, and, though she may find I Childsplay a difficult proposition in the | Great Northern Foal Stakes on Boxing !>ay at Ellerslie, there is reason to behieve the flying southerner will be ; fully extended before she will be en- ; titled to be acclaimed the winner of | that event. Strikingly marked in a fashion similar to that which made Humbug so conspicuous a figure on the racecourse, Episode was in the van

i from from the time the tapes went up ' and gave nothing else a chance, while i there is no doubt that she could have I increased the winning margin of a I length and a-half if that had been ' necessary. i Too Short for Lysander. The opinion was expressed in these columns prior to the contest for the Feilding Stakes that a longer course than the five furlongs attached to that event would be more to the liking of ; Lysander. So it proved. When the ' barrier went up the son of Absurd and Pennon was first to move but scon left ! the role of pacemaker to the speedy i Limited, being in fifth position, behind Kiosk, when a furlong and a-half had been covered. When the field swung into the straight Lysander was still in behind Kiosk and, finishing on well, was close up behind the placed horses when the was reached, being I within two lengths of the winner. An- • other furlong would have given the four-year-old a chance to gather up speed for a great effort, and though he may not have beaten Kiosk on the day, he would not have been far away. During the Christmas racing carnival he should earn a winning bracket for the master of the Koatanui Stud. I Kiosk’s Stakes Win. An impressive performance was recorded by Kiosk when he won the Feilding Stakes on Wednesday. W. H. Dwyer had the Tea Tray colt in tiptop order and the Wanganui mentor was very confident that his charge would be hard to beat. That, his judgment was not misplaced was proved by. the manner in which Kiosk went on with his task when the straight was reached. From the distance post there was nothing in it but the half-brother to Mireusonta and he was a length in front wdien the judge was reached, finishing full of running. He did not show any signs of distress when he pulled up and his three successes this season serve to show what an improvement wa-s worked by the operation last autumn for wind trouble. There are few speedier sprinters in commission in the Dominion than Kiosk, but much of the credit for that must, be given to his trainer. Lirnosa Breaks It. Over the six furlongs which the conditions of the Aorangi Trial Plate stipulated Lirnosa was unable to find ■ her feet and ran in the rear for the I greater part of the journey. On that ' | occasion she wm backed to the extent I of £263 and her rider was R. McTavish. jOn Thursday she was saddled up for i the Rongotea Hack Handicap, which 1 was run over eight and a-half furlongs. I \%th J. Barry in the saddle the ■ iLifnond mare was entrusted with £249 : jin a field of about the same size as ’ contested the Trial Plate. Allowed to • run along over the. initial stages of the journey Lirnosa still had half a dozen of her opponents in front of ( her when they passed the five furlong post but she worked her way through and was just behind Volplane and Sovent when they swung into the straight. Once in line for the judge Lirnosa camo away to win nicely by a length from Thurnbell. 'This was the first win re- . coWed by Lirnosa, who last season ’ started three times without earning a winning bracket. She is engaged in ' the M’hariti Handicap at Woodville i next Wednesday. ' A Quartette of Brackets. ' A striking fact, in connection with • the concluding day’s results at Feilding was the success of bracketed 1 horses. On four occasions was there a bracket on the totalisator and in each case a dividend was returned to backers of the coupled horses. In the ’ Novice Stakes Courageous and Spear- , miss, both owned by Mr W. R. Kernball, were bracketed on the machine, ’ though they were in different stables. The former scored a narrow victory in , a close finish and the dividend attach- ’ ed to his win was a good one, though } only a twentieth of what he would . have paid in the Aorangi Tria! Plate t on Wednesday had he reversed posir tions with Broad Acre, Episode and ’ Curtain were the coupled pair in the " Oroua Nursery Handicap and the forI mer was in front when the post was ( passed, while in the next event The ’ Raider, the winner, was bracketed I with Lady Cynthia on the machine. . Then it remained for another KembaH ' I bracket to continue the sequence, and when Thurnbell filled the role of runi ner-up to to Lirnosa a very acceptable dividend was the result. It was a ' great “trot.” The Feilding Secretary. All the good things said about the {popular secretary of the Feilding Joc- , I key Club at the valedictory gathering ’ ,j on Thursday were well earned, as Mr I Goodbehere ranks among the most j {popular racing officials in the Dominj ion. But at the same time a word of praise must, be accorded his able li_utenant, his son Guy, who for a considerable period has handled the reins ' of office as assistant his father. Well liked by the racing fraternity, it ' should not be anything else but his due to be allowed to continue to ad- ’ minister the affairs of the club which . his father has helped so much to at- / tain a place among the leading racing } | clubs in the Dominion. An official . {announcement would be well received
