Hastings Garfield Ireland appeared to-day for sentence at thc Supreme Court before Mr Justice Adams on charges of breaking and entering a shop, theft and attempted arson at Methven. Alexander Thompson appeared on a charge of breaking, entering and theft. For the defence it was alleged that the whole affair was the result of a, drinking bout, but the Crown did not accept this story, alleging a deliberate attempt was made to fire the premises to cover the traces of the theft. The prisoners were each sentenced to three years’ reformative treatment.
