IN SUPPORT OF CABLES
WAR-TIME VALUE THE BEAM CONTROVERSY. .Received December 2, 2 a.m. (A. and N.Z.) LONDON, Dec. .1. The cable v. beam wireless controversy continues to Be given wide prominence in the Press. In a two-column review the Daily Telegraph urges that it is the height of folly for the Empire to encourage the beain, to the detriment of the efficient maintenance of cables, despite the impressive results, and says thx
beam would be untrustworthy in wartime as it passes en route to Australia over tracts of European and Asiatic territory where it would be most simple for a hostile Government to establish inexpensive beam stations and jam signals without interfering with their own signals concentrated on another objective.
It emphasises that other countries are not neglecting cables, and mentions as examples America’s new 13,000 miles in five years, and in addition another contemplated 10,000 miles, Italy’s new 10,000 miles and Germany’s restored cable from Emden to New York via Azores.
