OHAKUNE

WAIMARJNO BRASS BAND. [ Special “ Chronicle ” Servke ] The annual meeting of the Waimarino Brass Band was held last week. The president (Mr G. J. Goldfinch), was in the chair and over 40 bandsmen and supporters were present. The reoprt and balance-sheet were adopted. Bandmaster P. p. Wood said that they had paid a deposit of £2OO on a new set. of silver Boosey instruments. The total cost would be about, £550. If the balance was paid within one year, no interest would be charged. If spread over two or three years a charge of six per cent, would be made. The iristruments would arrive next month and the public would have the chance of inspecting them. Baker, and J. Scott. After the meeting terminated a very pleasant social time was spent. The following toast list interspersed with items, was honoured in the customary manner: Items were contributed by the following: Song, Mr C. Gordon; whistling solo, Mr T Smith; song; Mr J. Kerr; whistling solo, Mr Swift; finger step dance, Air J. Scott; monologue, Mr T. Smith; song, Air J. Cosford; song, Mr C. Adam; song, Mr R. Hay; whistling recitation, Mr J. Scott; cornet solo, Mr Swift.

AU the items were well rendered and received hearty applause, the artists contributing greatly to the evening’s entertainment. MAGISTRATE’S COURT The case of Marekura Hori (Mr Ritchie) v. D. H. Strachan (Mr Waldegrave) was heard before Mr R. M. Watson, SM. Plaintiff claimed £59 5s for use and occupation of land from April 1923 to .1926, in the Murumoto block. Evidence previously taken at Wanganui and Ohakune, was read. Marekura Hori recalled, said Strachan said that owing to their being no fence on 58. 2C. people eould not keep their stock off. Strachan told him abous two years ago that he did not want the lease. Strachan had paid him one year’s rent and kept back a further year for the cost of survey. D. H. Strachan, defendant said he had paid the rent on behalf of his brother, Laurie. He had paid, rates on the property up till about two years ago- He had told Marekura Hori that lie did not want the land as they could not get a proper lease. Decision was tcsCtved. In the case of the Ideal Loan and Finance Co. v. G. D. Blacklock the Magistrate gave reserved decision, in favour of defendant without costs. The Waimarino Brass Band were fined £2 and costs in connection with the raffling of a cake at Rangataua. GENERAL There was a very large crowd at the 500 “flag” tournament, held in the Plunket Rooms on Monday evening, in aid of the Catholic Church funds. A very enjoyable evening was spent and resulted in Mr and Airs C. Clemett and Airs Long securing the prizes. At present the local tennis courts are being top-dressed. They will be ready for play about the week-end- The senior inter-club match, which was to have been played here on Saturday has been postponed to December 17. The Presbyterians held a shop at Ohakune on Saturday. A varied assortment of goods were on sale, the returns from which were very satisfactory. At the band’s annual meeting on Friday the sum of £1 Is was donated by one present. Later in the evening he picked up one of the band’s instruments and after examining it intimated his willingness to increase 'his donation to £2 2s. “Better let him have another look, he might make it three guineas,” remarked another gentleman, amid much laughter.
