END OF SPRING RACING

FEILDING MEETING CONCLUDES Wanganui Horses Again Successful in Three Events By “KESTREL” The Feilding Jockey Club’s spring meeting concluded yesterday in weather that was not so pleasant as was Wednesday’s, but nevertheless there was a good crowd present. Several showers fell during the day, and a cold wind blew for the greater part of the afternoon. Some fine racing was furnished, and backers were on better terms with themselves than on the opening day, though there were a couple of mild surprises.

Fir st day s form worked out fairly. Well, Pouri improving on his second in the hurdles on Wednesday to win yesterday. Courageous, who paid a sensational dividend for second place in the maiden the first day. confirmed that form by winning the Novice Stakes in a close finish. The principal event, the St. Andrew’s Handicap, was won by the Awapunitrained Kilmiss, who paid a great price after her forward running on Wednesday. The victory of Episode in the juveniles 1 event was well anticipated in Wanganui, as was also, yo a minor degree, the win of Limosa in the Rongotea Hack. Wanganui also furnished the winner of the concluding race, Ruanui following up his first day success by annexing the Empire Handicap. Another win well foreseen by backers was the open sprint, which was won by Silvermine, a promising colt out of that former brilliant sprinter, Silver Link. The totalizator maintained the first day's increase, the amount handled being £20,481, compared with £17,664 on the corresponding day last year. The total for tho meeting was £46,258, an increase of £7.858 on last years £38,400. Daring the afternoon a presentation was made to Hr E. Goodbehere, who, after holding the office of secretary for some forty years, has relinquished the position. Congratulations were showered on the popular official, who has been a big figure in the progress of the club. A. description of the racing, with full details of the fields, follows. Pouri Wins the Hurdles. The eleven earded for the Cheltenham Hurdles went to the post. Pouri being sorted out as likely to improve most, and he carried £335, Star Area (£289), Brigadier Bill (£258), Troilus (£216) and Elysianor (£212), being the onlv others backed- Bracman. Bright Dav and Eivsianor were the early leaders* but Elysianor soon jumped to the front and led past the stands from Bright Day, Star Area, Braeman, Brigadier Bill, Mister Gamp and Troilus, with Pouri last. Panchito ran up to Eivsianor and Mister Gamp at the five furlongs, but when they tamed into the straight Pouri was in third berth, just behind Elysianor and Mister Gamp. The favourite asserted himself in the concluding stages, and was half a length to the good at the post. Brigadier Bill caught Elysianor fifty yards off the judge to get second money by a head, with Mister Gamp a head further away. Bevel was fifth and Braeman and Star Area followed. Consistent Courageous. Backtrs went for "Warfille in the Novice Stakes, the Warplane mare carrying £473, with Le Champ (£340) and Plane (£283 - next best fancied. Pee Simple ami Historic were first to ehow out from Warfille, Royal Picture, Card Trick and Aurora Borealis, Courageous and Whisogne being badly away. At the half Courageous had worked his way into sixth berth, the leaders being Fee Simple, Warfille. Royal Picture, Card Trick and Plane. Royal Picture was well in the lead at the entrance to the straight, but was done with in the run to the judge, Courageous putting in a great run to catch Plane on the poet, a head victory going down to the hero of the first day's big dividend, with Card Trick two lengths away, i Whisogne was fourth and Royal Picture, Le Champ, Warfille and Service were next. Kilmiss at a Price. Eleven were saddled up for the St. Andrew's Handicap, and on the opening day's display Wanderlust was nade favourite, carrying £425. with ?aitonu (£365), Joy Bird (£351) and Bonogne (£326), also supported. Paitonu was first to show out, being followed past the stands by Wanderlust, Waicullus, Joy Bird. Bonogne, Euphonium, Lady Anstruther and Kilmiss. At the five Paitonu had improved his lead to two lengths, Joy Bird, Wanderlust, Bonogne, Lady Anstruther, Waicullus, Euphonium and Kilmiss following, and he turned into the straight in front of the favourite. Euphonium beaded the pair half way up the running, only to go under in the last few strides to a strong challenge from Kilmiss, who won by a neck. Wanderlust was only a head away, and Paitonu, Queen’s Choice, Waicullus, Novar, Joy Bird and Vivo were next to finish. One for Wanganui. Royal Duke was well backed for the Oroua Nursery, being entrusted with £7O-1, while the Wanganui bracket, Episode and Curtain, carried £478, nearly £2OO more than Te Atiawa. Curtain and High Fainting got away slowly, Episode going out to make the pace from Te Atiawa and Miss Gowrie, Select and Royal Duke following. Episode held her own round the bend and when they straightened up the Limond filly came on to win comfortably by a length and a half, with Select half a length behind Tc Atiawa. Royal Duke

was half a length further back and Charmaline, Miss Gowrie and Briar Root were next to finish. Prior to the start, E. Dunn, rider of Charmaline, sustained an injury to a foot, and W. Jones took the ride. Warplane Gelding Wins. Nothing but Vast Acre (£636) and Expense (£572) was wanted in the Nikau Hack, the pair carrying nearly half the investments. The favourite was quickest out from the tapes, Powhiri, The Raider, Royal Time, Lucky Days, Expense and Miss Mercia following. The Raider had run into the lead at the half, with the order of the rest little altered, but at the entrance to the straight Lucky Days ran into fourth bertlu The Raider turned for home clear of Vast Acre and went on to score by a length and a half, Lucky Days beating the favourite by a similar distance for the minor dividend. After the placed horses were Powhiri, Hinekatorangi, Expense, Royal Elm, Borsalene and Miss Mercia. Silvermiue First Out,: First Home. Kight started for the Colyton Handicap, tjilvenniue (£813) being the elect of backers, with Arrow Lad, the only other fancied, with £5lB on his chances. The favourite hit the front at the start, being followed out from the tapes by Licinius, Mireusonta, Arrow Lad, Deluge aud Royal Land. The order was not much changed running out of the back stretch, save that Mireusonta dropped back and Arrow Lad moved up, being just behind the leader at the home turn. There was nothing in it with the favourite over the concluding stages, and he won nicely from Arrow Lad by half a length, with Deluge two lengths away in third place. Mireusonta was fourth and Whenuanui, Royal Land and Huikai were next in that order. At the distance Licinius, who was running third, got on the heels of Arrow Lad and fell, but his rider, McTavish, escaped injury. Limosa’s First Win. The big field of fifteen carded for the Rongotea Hack faced the starter, Ortatrix (£676) and Henna (£615) being twice as well backed as Boy (£351). Sovena showed up as they ran out of the straight, being just in front of Tanagra, Irish Lad, Thurnbell, Henna, Lieutenant Bill, Volplane, Anchon and Limosa. At the five furlongs Sovena still led from Irish Lad, Tanagra, Thurnbell, Henna, Volplane and Limosa, but when they swung round into the straight Limosa was just behind i Volplane and Sovena, with Henna, 1 Archon and Thurnbell next. Asserting herself in solid fashion in the run home Limosa won by a length from Thurnbell, with Henna in third berth, half a length away. Next to finish were Volplane, Archon, Boy, Oratrix and Calithe. Ruanui Takes the Last. The Empire Handicap, with which the meeting concluded, was a great betting race, Duke Abbey (£902), Ruanui (£635) and Epistle (£515), carrying most money in a big pool. After the start had been delayed by Duke Abbey, Partaga and Orazone, they got away well, Polyphemus leading out from Epistle, The Lamb, Bright Knight and Ruanui. Duke Abbey went up fast between the live and the four, where he was lying fourth, behind Polyphemus, Ruanui and Epistle, and the favourite was with Epistle at the turn. Ruanui and Polyphemus being the leading p<air. Ruanui held off all challenges up the straight and won nicely by a length and a half from the fast-finishing Partaga, with Orazone a length away and Duke Abbey close up, Epistle, Polyphemus and Gleninnis followed the favourite past the post. SPORTSMEN GATHER i RACING OFFICIAL HONOURED FEILDING SECRETARY RETIRES Members of the Feilding Jockeyt Club and representatives of other racing ciubs gatherer! together at the racecourse yestenyay alternoon to mark the retirement of Mr Edmund Goodbehere from the- secretaryship of the club after 36 years’ service. Those present included Messrs E. L. liickliford and W. S. Watkins (Wellington Racing Club), K. Deighton and J. R. L. Standford (Marton Jockey Club;, J. AL Johnston (Manawatu Racing Club), B. AlacDonaid (Asbhurst Racing Club), E. A. Campbell anE? Russell Grace (Wanganui Jockey Club) and a particularly representative gathering oi racing enthusiasts. Mr H. E. Standford (president) said he was extremely pleased with, the large gathering aud ail knew that there were many who were unable to be present. He kad received apologies for absence from Messre G. Eliott, MLP., J. Linklater, M.P., and J. Nash, M.P., also from Sir George Clifford and very many others. The speaker read; the contents of a letter from the President of the Racing Conference in which he paid high, tributes to the work of Mr Goodbehere. Mr Standford said that Mr Goodbehere had earned t'ne unmeasurable respect of every racing man throughout the Dominion. He would not say, however, that their friend had not made any enemies—no man with backbone and pluck could,’ go through life without nmning some enemies. Mr Goodbehere had performed most faithful service to the Club and all joined in paying tribute to one whose name would over be coupled with that of the Feilding Jockey ClubAir E. A. Campbell, president of the Wanganui Jockey Club said that throughout the long years his oid friend had; been secretary at Feilding he had known him as a gentleman and an upright honourable man, and, as Air Sandford had said, no good man who carried out his duties and had. the backbone to carry out his work could go through life without making enemies. Air Campbell said he knew that Mr Goodbehere had carried out his duties to the Feilding Jockey Club and; those associated with the work of the Racing Conference in a manner worthy of the highest praise and he had assisted to keep the high standard of racing that obtains in New Zealand to-day. it was regrettable that the high chief of racing in New Zealand was unable to be present. As far as Mr Goodbehere was concerned it was not the present that he valued but the feeling which induced it. It was the same feeling which induced the large gathering assembled to do honour to Air Goodbehere. It was therefore, he said, with extreme pleaiiure that he handled to Air Goodbehere with the sincere good wishes of the members of the Feilding Club a solid silver tea service. , Enthusiastic cheering greeted the presentation, followed by tho singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” In returning thanks, Air Goodbehere touched briefly on his early association with the “king of sports” some forty years ago. Ho had seen racing when much was open to question, improve to its high standard of to-day. There was no doubt that racing was more clean in New Zealand than in any other country in the world and it was as clean as any other sport in New Zealand- , Further cheers for the guest concluded a happy gathering.
