OYSTER CULTURE

Sir. —With reference to Mr J. A. Neame's suggestion that the swamp at Castlecliff should be turned into an oyster bed: Mr Neame can hardly be aware of the danger there is of serious illnesses being contracted through the j consumption of oysters which have ; been contaminated owing to the presence of drainage, or other impurities, in sea-water. It was owing to this cause that a high dignitary of the Church met his death from typhoid fever, after attending the well-known Colchester oyster feast some years ago, and should the sea-water here be pumped direct from the river estuary, such dangers would undoubtedly exist. But perhaps Mr Neame did not mean to be taken seriously? THE .WALBUTS * November 30.
