REMITS OPPOSED
MAYOR VOICES OBJECTION “STRIKE AT THE BOOT OF DEMOCRACY.” Two remits to gn forward to the Municipal Conference to be held at Nelson shortly, have been prepared by Mr W. M. Luxford, a member of the Wanganui City Council, and have received the approval of the Council. Th© Mayor (Mr W. J.’Rogers), however, has registered his objection, stating that they strike at the fundamental root of democracy, in which he believed. The remits ar© as follow: ‘That the Municipal Corporations Act be amended to provide for a portion only of councillors retiring every two years instead of the whole of the councillors having to retire.” “That the Local Government Loans Board’s functions be extended to include advertising fur objections by ratepayers to any loan which may be placed before the Board for approval; all objections to be gone into by the Board and if, after going into the evidence in support of the objections, the loan is approved by the Board. the Board’s approval be final and obviate the necessity of taking a poll of tflo ratepayers by the' local body concerned.”
