THE FERRY FARE

UPOKONGARO CROSSING MOTORISTS ASK FOB REDUCTION. With the idea of providing motorists with a pleasant Sunday afternoon run, and incidentally bringing extra cash to the coffers of the Wanganui and Waitotara County Councils, the Wanganui Automobile Association recently made a request to the local bodies concerned, that they reduce the J charge of 2s 6d per car to Is for the ‘ use of the Upokongaro ferry. On Friday last the Wanganui County Council turned down the suggestion to lower the fare, pointing out that the charge of 2s 6d also covered any passengers who might be in a car. and yesterday the Waitotara County Council adopted a similar attitude. It might bo mentioned that the Automobile Association al,so proposed to | do its part in attracting business to j the ferry and offered to erect notices at the approaches on either side, advising car drivers that there was no danger in boarding the ferry, and that the Aramoho camping site was on that route. A motorist, speaking to a “Chronicle” man on the subject yesterday, stated that it was very little more expensive to go round the river via the Dublin St. bridge, than to pay the present ferry charge, and further, if the ferry happened to be on the other side of the river when a motorist called at the landing, the round trip took no longer.
